He was most noted for his work on territoriality, which informs this enthralling book. He traces the lives of birds during breeding season - the trials and tribulations of which the plates depict in an unusually frank manner - and moves on to a discussion of the bird's mind. Throughout he examines the behaviour of the bird in relation to its territory, resulting in a pioneering, as well as engagingly written, work.
