Frank Rösch is author of more than 200 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters on fundamental and applied radiochemistry and editor of the 5-volume Handbook of Nuclear Chemistry. Some notations noted in the text. Gerhart Friedlander (July 28, 1916 September 6, 2009) was an American nuclear chemist who worked on the Manhattan Project. Friedlander fled Nazi Germany for the United States in 1936. After emigrating, he studied with Glenn Seaborg at the University of California, Berkeley, earning a Ph.D. in 1942. In 1943, he joined the Manhattan Project, and in 1944 became the leader of the radioactive lanthanum (RaLa) group in the Chemistry Division. After the war, he was a research associate at General Electric from 1946-1948, and spent the bulk of his career at Brookhaven National Laboratory, where he served as head of the chemistry department between 1968 and 1977. He developed models that remained in use at the time of his death. Joseph William Kennedy (May 30, 1916 May 5, 1957) was an American chemist who co-discovered plutonium, along with Glenn T. Seaborg, Edwin McMillan, and Arthur Wahl. During World War II, he led the CM (Chemistry and Metallurgy) Division at the Manhattan Project's Los Alamos Laboratory, where he oversaw research onto the chemistry and metallurgy of uranium and plutonium. After the war, he taught at Washington University in St. Louis, where he is credited with transforming the university into a research institution. Radiochemistry is the chemistry of radioactive materials, where radioactive isotopes of elements are used to study the properties and chemical reactions of non-radioactive isotopes (often within radiochemistry the absence of radioactivity leads to a substance being described as being inactive as the isotopes are stable). Much of radiochemistry deals with the use of radioactivity to study ordinary chemical reactions. This is very different from radiation chemistry where the radiation levels are kept too low to influence the chemistry. Radiochemistry includes the study of both natural and man-made radioisotopes. Friedlander's and Kennedy's Introduction to Radiochemistry was perhaps the most renown and influential textbook issued after the detonation of the atomic bombs that helped end the Second World War in the Pacific. This work was foundational to the training of generations of nuclear scientists and chemists in the early Cold War period. This textbook represents the state-of-knowledge, the state-of-practice, and the state-of-the-art at the time of publication. As such it is immensively important not just for its technical content but as a baseline against which to measure the progress in the knowledge and practice of radiochemistry for several decades to come.
