Il lavoro prevede anche l'inserimento di alcuni sonetti di Milton in italiano; probabilmente il Baretti li tradusse sotto il suggerimento di Johnson, suo maestro e punto di riferimento dopo il trasferimento a Londra nel 1751. The preface to this book is almost certainly largely by Johnson, as one can tell from the opening paragraph: 'Unjust objections commonly proceed from unjust expectations, and writers are often censured for omitting what they never intended to perform' (p. v). Hazen has, however, pointed out that there are also one or two infelicities of style in the preface, which must result from additions by Baretti. The footnotes on pp. 48-49 and 198 are also very possibly Johnson's work. Johnson became acquainted with Giuseppe Baretti (1719-89) not long after he arrived in England in 1751, through Charlotte Lennox, who had asked Baretti to teach her Italian. He was soon part of the circle and, inspired by Johnson's success with his great Dictionary, published his own Dictionary of the English and Italian Languages in 1760. This work prints parallel passages of Italian and English texts on facing pages, and could have been of enormous help to those seeking to acquire some fluency in reading Italian. Fleeman 55.7BIL; Hazen, Prefaces and Dedications, pp. 12-15. Provenance. Early signature on endpaper 'E. Brydges'. Roger Lonsdale has speculated that this might be the hand of Sir Samuel Egerton Brydges (1762-1837), novelist, poet and genealogist, but he almost always signed himself as 'SE Brydges'. There are dozens of short marginal notes, showing that the owner was trying to improve their acquaintance with Italian, and if the owner were Elizabeth Brydges, Sir Egerton's first wife (d. 1796), it would still have been in the family library at Lee Priory in the 1790s. In the 20th century, the book was owned by Raymond Richards, whose armorial bookplate is in the book. …
