An Introduction to Entomology; or, Elements of the Natural History of Insects: comprising an account of noxious and useful insects, of their metamorphoses, food, stratagems, habitations, societies, motions, noises, hybernation, instinct, etc. etc. Seventh edition, with an appendix relative to the origin and progress of the work. xxviii, 607, [1], [2] advert, 24pp publisher's catalogue. Original blind and gilt stamped cloth, with beetle motif on the upper board. Some wear to the head and tail of the spine, and upper joint. Owner's name and name-stamp on front end paper. 8vo. Longman. 1856. ~ William Kirby and William Spence's Introduction to Entomology is generally recognized as one of the founding texts of entomological science in English. This is the first printing of the final lifetime edition, which has been greatly expanded, with a new appendix. Unlike the works in French and German, there had not been any work so comprehensive published in English before. In his "Preface" to the first edition, Spence explained: "One principal cause of the little attention paid to Entomology in this country," was that there had been "ridicule so often thrown upon the science." Botanists were "sheltered now by the sanction of fashion," but "in the minds of most men, the learned as well as the vulgar, the idea ofthe trifling nature of this pursuit is so strongly associated with that of the diminutive size of its objects, that an Entomologist is synonymous with every thing futile and childish.".

"One principal cause of the little attention paid to Entomology in the country, has doubtless been the ridicule so often thrown upon the science . in the minds of most men, the learned as well as the vulgar, the idea of the trifling nature of his pursuit is so strongly associated with that of the diminutive size of its objects, that an Entomologist . is synonymous with every thing futile and childish . there are evidentally no great attractions to lead him to a science which promises only to signalize him as an object of pity or contempt . how can he look for sympathy in a pursuit unknown to the world, except as indicative of littleness of mind? (Preface pp. v-vi). Despite being made fun of for their interest in bugs, the authors compiled an extensive multi-volume set. This volume discusses the metamorphoses of insects, the direct and indirect injuries insects cause, injuries to vegetables, ravages of locusts, direct and indirect benefits derived from insects, their food, habitations, and "affection" for their young.

A Cambridge-educated clergyman, William Kirby (17591850) published his first entomological work on the bees in his Suffolk parish. By contrast, the early writings of William Spence (c.17821860) were concerned with political economy. Having developed an interest in insects, Spence became acquainted with Kirby in 1805 and the pair collaborated on this influential work, originally published between 1815 and 1826. Spence researched for several months in the library of Sir Joseph Banks, but illness later forced Kirby to complete the project. Significantly, he distanced himself from Spence's secular treatment of insect behaviour. Charles Darwin, who had the work with him aboard the Beagle, deemed this 'the best discussion on instincts ever published'.
