Erstausgabe
8vo. xviii, 355 pp. 20 plates including photos & figs., 2 folding tables, index. Mauve cloth, gilt spine; faded. Very good+. FIRST EDITION. The Interpretation of the Atom was written to replace Soddy's earlier masterpiece Interpretation of Radium, and explores the developments in the fields of atomic chemistry and radiation since the earlier work. Soddy excelled at Oxford where he studied under William Ramsay, and went on to collaborate with him on "the classic experiment which identified the gaseous product of radioactive decay of radium with helium." Williams, A Biographical Dictionary of Scientists, p. 482. Soddy also worked with Rutherford in determining that radioactivity is both an atomic and a chemical phenomenon. It is Soddy who coined the term isotope after realizing that atoms could be chemically identical yet have different weights. He was awarded the 1921 Nobel Prize for Chemistry. Wasson, Nobel Prize Winners; Williams, A Biographical Dictionary of Scientist; DSB. DSB, XII: p. 504.
