AJS: There was no practical flag book for the merchant service until 1817 when Captain Frederick Marryat RN, produced his Code of Signals for the Merchant Service. The book was an international success going through nineteen editions between 1817 and 1879, there were a number of foreign language editions too. In 1857 a new code entitled the Commercial Code of Signals (later, from 1870, known as the International Code) was published under the authority of the British Board of Trade, and gradually this superseded Marryat. The copy catalogued here is dated 1877: - Prepared under the authority of the Board of Trade.
