With a publisher's slip bound in with the volume stating 'This edition of the International Code of Signals will come into use on 1st January 1901 .'A revised edition of the of the original 1857 International Signal Book, which at the time failed to meet the requirements of the Mercantile Marine. This volume comprises a more updated copy of the international system of signals and codes for use by vessels to communicate important messages concerning the safety of navigation and related matters.Structured in two parts: Part I with instructions on how to signal, including how to make alphabetical spelling signals and numeral signals, and Part II on distant signals, including the fixed semaphore for coast use.Illustrated with twelve full page coloured plates of flags, as well as numerous other illustrations in text. With numerous leaves of advertisements. In the original publisher's quarter morocco binding over cloth covered boards. Externally rather worn with some shelf wear and chipping to the extremities, of the boards, rubbing to the spine and boards, with some minor losses to the cloth of the boards and a touch of edge wear. General light soiling to the boards and spine. Internally, firmly bound. The pages are clean with a touch of age toning to the protruding title indexes, as usual, and to the first and last few leaves. Illustrated with twelve full page coloured plates of flags, as well as numerous other illustrations in text. With numerous leaves of advertisements. Good. book.

AJS: There was no practical flag book for the merchant service until 1817 when Captain Frederick Marryat RN, produced his Code of Signals for the Merchant Service. The book was an international success going through nineteen editions between 1817 and 1879, there were a number of foreign language editions too. In 1857 a new code entitled the Commercial Code of Signals (later, from 1870, known as the International Code) was published under the authority of the British Board of Trade, and gradually this superseded Marryat. The copy catalogued here is dated 1877: - Prepared under the authority of the Board of Trade. With The British Code List for 1878, for the Use of Ships at Sea, and for Signal Stations, Appendix to the International Code of Signals prepared by Allen Stonham, Esq., Registrar General of Shipping and Seamen.
