Norimbergae: Apud Adami Ionath. Felseckeri Hered., 1747, 12°, (8), 538, (36) pp., feiner Pappband. FIRST TEXTBOOK OF PHYSIOLOGY ! Institutiones medicae was responsible, more than any other work for establishing the study of physiology as an academic discipline. In 1701, at the age of thirty-three, Boerhaave (1668-1738) was appointed lecturer in medicine by the University of Leiden. Seven years later his lectures were published in the present book which is considered to be the first textbook of physiology and a medical classic. It is divided into four sections: physiology, pathology, hygiene and therapeutics, with important observations on digestion in the first section. The book was largely responsible for Boerhaave's European reputation. Its title was used as the accepted name for courses on physiology in medical schools until well into the nineteenth century. Dr. John Fulton wrote a study on the influence of this work on modern physiology. Numerous editions and translations were published, even into Arabic and Turkish. Garrison-Morton 581 (1st. Ed. 1708); Forster, Hist. of Physiology, pp. 201-202; J.F. Fulton, "The Influence of Boerhaave's Institutiones Medicae on Modem Physiology'' in Ned. Tiidschrift v. Gen 1938, pp. 228 ff. Lindeboom 55.

Francoforti ad. Moenum, Georgii Heinrici Oerhlingii, 1710, 12°, (24), 257, (3), pp., Pappband d.Zt.: minimal fleckig. Rare first edition published in Germany, first unauthorized edition, second published in general! "The lectures which Boerhaave gave the first on June 23, 1701, were called : Institutiones Medicae. The book bearing this title is based on these lectures. From the prolegomena of the second edition of this book we see that Boerhaave understood by Institutiones Medicae the medical doctrine, consisting of 5 parts : a. physiology ; b. pathology ; c. semeiotica ; d. hygiene ; e. therapeutics. Physiology, pathology and therapeutics make up a whole. Perhaps it would be better to say ; they were not yet separated. This was no longer the case a century later. Fulton wrote a study on the influence of this work on modern physiology 2). This is important to a bibliography of Boerhaave for sometimes parts of the book were edited separately or remodelled. As in his funeral oration, the reliable Schultens gives 1707 as the of appearance, probably the book came from press towards the end of that year, but was dated 1708. This corresponds with the date of the preface ; September 20, 1707." G.A. Lindeboom, Bibliographia Boerhaaviana (1959), pp.27-28 1) Arch. path. Anat. (1858), XIII, 1.
