Hardcover. Zustand: New. Whatever be the definition of 'indigenous' vis-a-vis 'indigeneity', and however consensual it might be, both these terms have been inferred, applied and questioned in multifarious ways. The concept indigeneity in Asia has transformed considerably, over a period of time. With the rise in the indigeneity movement and large-scale migration, citizenship within national borders is challenged, and the borders in question are also contested. The book chronicles the discernible strains on the questions of indigeneity, citizenship, identity, and border making in the Northeast. The issues pertaining to indigeneity, citizenship, and state, are also a reminder of the residues of colonial doings that have had a colossal impact till this day. Through empirical evidence backed by theoretical underpinnings, each essay in the book demonstrates the diversity of approaches that can be used to interrogate the debate on indigeneity, citizenship, the state and opens the conversation on Northeast India.

Soft cover. Zustand: New. Indigenous festivals are not merely cultural celebrations but complex sites of discourse where Indigenous peoples articulate their belonging, resist domination, and engage with global audiences. The book Globalizing Indigeneity, through the lens of the Karbi Youth Festival (KYF), one of the largest ethnic festivals in Northeast India, explores these dynamics in depth. The book is structured around four key themes: Reimagining Tradition, Sustaining Cultural Identity, Asserting Indigenous Agency, and Fostering Inter-Ethnic Connections. It illustrates how the KYF resists cultural homogenization and colonial legacies by revitalizing language, performance, rituals, and customs, fostering ethnic pride and solidarity along the way. The festival embodies both cultural resurgence and socio-political resistance, offering a platform for marginalized voices and Indigenous narratives to challenge prevailing global and regional discourses. In doing so, the KYF demonstrates how Indigenous groups can assert a global presence by engaging with international frameworks for Indigenous rights and cultural preservation without losing their rootedness in local tradition. This perspective emphasizes the ongoing negotiation between local specificity and global Indigenous solidarity as a means to empower Indigenous peoples worldwide. About the Author Dharamsing Teron is the Director of the Centre for Karbi Studies, Diphu, Assam, India. He was awarded an honorary doctorate by Gauhati University in 2022 for his outstanding contributions to the study of Karbi folklore. Vulli Dhanaraju is currently working as a Professor in the Department of History at North-Eastern Hill University, Shillong, Meghalaya, India. Currently, he is associating with the Centre for Karbi Studies Diphu, Assam, India to document Karbi history and philosophy.
