Buch
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book explores the Indian Ocean world as it is produced by colonial and postcolonial fiction in English. It analyses the work of three contemporary authors who write the Indian Ocean as a region and world-Amitav Ghosh, Abdulrazak Gurnah, and Lindsey Collen-alongside maritime-imperial precursor Joseph Conrad. If postcolonial literatures are sometimes read as national allegories, this book presents an account of a different and significant strand of postcolonial fiction whose geography, in contrast, is coastal and transoceanic. This work imaginatively links east Africa, south Asia and the Arab world via a network of south-south connections that precedes and survives European imperialism. The novels and stories provide a vivid, storied sense of place on both a local and an oceanic scale, and in so doing remap the world as having its centre in the ocean and the south.

Buch
Buch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - In Muslim Indian Women Writing in English: Class Privilege, Gender Disadvantage, Minority Status, Dr. Elizabeth Jackson conducts a study of the literary fiction of the four best-known Muslim Indian women writing in English during the postcolonial period: Attia Hosain (1913-1998), Zeenuth Futehally (1904-1992), Shama Futehally (no relation, 1952-2004), and Samina Ali (b. 1969). As elite Muslim women in India, the literary vision of these authors is influenced by their paradoxical position of class privilege, gender disadvantage, and minority status. Accordingly, there are recurring thematic concerns central to the fiction of all four writers, each of which forms a chapter in the book: 'Religion and Communal Identity,' 'Marriage and Sexuality,' 'Gender and Social Class,' and 'Responding to Patriarchy.' The first chapter, 'Form and Narrative Strategy,' provides an initial framework by examining the literary techniques of each writer.Much has been written about literature in English by Indian women, about Muslim literature in general, about the Muslim minority in India, and about Muslim women all over the world. However, until now there has been no major academic study of literature in English by Muslim Indian women. Aimed at researchers, students, and general readers, this book aims to fill that gap in the critical scholarship.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Bachelor Thesis from the year 2022 in the subject English Language and Literature Studies - Literature, grade: 1,0, University of Wuppertal (Anglistik / Amerikanistik), language: English, abstract: Arundhati Roy¿s novel 'The Ministry of Utmost Happiness' and Vishwajyoti Ghosh¿s graphic novel 'Delhi Calm' are two seemingly very disparate narratives due to their differences in themes, genre and media. However, as this thesis argues, despite their differences, both are part of the same literary development and, therefore, highlight the innovative potential and variety of contemporary Indian English Writing. Moreover, as this thesis further argues, both narratives can be read as significant and innovative contributions to this growing body of post-millennial Indian Writing in English and the overall canon of IWE, as they show different and unique ways of depicting and critiquing the Indian nation and offer new approaches to literary realism.
