Hardback. Zustand: Good. By the end of 1966, the Boston Red Sox were a team in serious trouble. The Red Sox had not won a pennant in twenty years and had not posted a winning record in eight. Pampered by their benevolent owner, Tom Yawkey, the Red Sox had developed a reputation as a team that cared more about having a good time than winning baseball games. The "Gold Sox" (or "Jersey Street Jesters") were sometimes playing before fewer than 1,000 fans at Fenway Park. Yawkey, disillusioned, began seriously considering selling the team or moving the franchise to another city. Then, in 1967, a brash rookie manager named Dick Williams took charge of a hungry, but very young and inexperienced team that did not know how to win. A strict disciplinarian, Williams had no tolerance for nonsense, and he taught the Red Sox how to play the game right. Yet, when he predicted that the Red Sox would win more games than they'd lose in 1967, no one took him seriously. The Red Sox forged a 10-game, midseason winning streak. Adopting the theme song from the hit Broadway musical, Man of La Mancha, the 1967 Red Sox season became "The Impossible Dream." The fans grew excited again and started flocking to Fenway Park or tuning their radios to the broadcasts of the games. Over the season's final six weeks, the Red Sox never led or trailed by more than 1 1/2 games. Three teams were still in the pennant race during their final game. When that day was over, the Red Sox had become the first and only team in major-league history to rise from ninth place to league champion. The Red Sox remain indebted to the 1967 champions, and they will be indebted forever. Rico Petrocelli, one of Boston's most beloved athletes and a twenty-four-year-old shortstop on that "Impossible Dream" team, recaptures the thrills of that improbable season through his unique anecdotes. Rico chronicles both the nightmare that threatened to swallow an organization and the resurrection that would reinvigorate a team and a city that share the same heart. Now updated to include the Red Sox's successes since the 1967 season, Tales from the 1967 Red Sox Dugout is a must-have for all BoSox fans.…

Paperback. Zustand: Good. One Bible. One Dream. One God. In 1961, a young couple boarded a ship to Vienna with nothing but faith, a suitcase, and an "impossible dream"--to bring the Word of God into the most spiritually restricted places on earth. What began with handwritten Scripture, smuggled Bibles, and hidden church meetings has become a sweeping movement of Gospel transformation across Eastern Europe and beyond. The Impossible Dream takes you deep into the heart of that mission, sharing firsthand accounts of courage, smuggling, sacrifice, and the miraculous power of Scripture. Through riveting stories witness how God's Word made its way past secret police, prison walls, and warzones--straight into the hearts of those who needed it most. When was the last time you dreamed an impossible dream? It is time to start dreaming again as Christians. Big dreams. God-sized dreams. Bob Burckle and Dirk Smith will help you see and experience how in expecting the unexpected and anticipating miracles, God made impossible dreams come true. If you want to be encouraged, energized and reignited to dream again, welcome to the fellowship of saints who have seen impossible dreams come true. -- CARMEN LABERGE, Host of the daily Christian talk radio show The Reconnect Every page echoes with one truth: God's Word cannot be contained. From Cold War oppression to today's digital Bible revolutions, this book invites you to step into the movement--and to become part of it. Because the dream isn't over. Join the mission. Fund a Bible. Change a life.…

Hardback. Zustand: Very Good. Winner of the Independent Publisher Book Awards Silver Medal for Best Regional Nonfiction in the Southwest The story of how Florida became entwined with Americans' twentieth-century hopes, dreams, and expectations is also a tale of mass delusion, real estate collapses, and catastrophic hurricanes. For Sale--American Paradise hones in on the experiences of American icon William Jennings Bryan, journalist Edwin Menninger, and others who shaped the image of Florida that we know today and who sold that image as America's paradise. The cast also includes the Marx Brothers, Thomas Edison, Al Capone, a pack of backwoods bandits known as the Ashley Gang, and the visionaries and businessmen who poured their dreams and their cash into Florida in the roaring, raucous 1920s. A tale of a colorful and tragicomic era during which the allure and illusion of the American Dream was on full display--a Jazz Age period when Americans started chasing what F. Scott Fitzgerald called the orgiastic future--the book reveals how the 2008 collapse of Florida real estate was eerily similar to events that happened there in the 1920s What sets the mid-1920s' Florida land boom apart from more recent booms-and-busts, however, is that this was the first time that emerging new technologies, mass communications, and modern advertising techniques were used to sell the nation on the notion that prosperity and happiness are entitlements that are simply there for the taking. Florida's image as a place where the rules of everyday life don't apply and winners go to play was formed during this dawn of the age of consumerism when Americans wanted to have fun and make lots of money, and millions of them thought Florida was the perfect place to do that. …
