Full leather. Folio. Full leather, mottled boards with raised bands and gold gilt decorations along spine and board edges. Leather is lifting and separating from boards, especially at front board and along spine. Raised bands are gently rubbed. Top and bottom panels of spine are chipped at edges so that parts of the bands show. Weak hinges, but boards are still sturdy. Corners are curling and scuffed. Some worming throughout, but no text is lost. Spine and board seams are splitting badly, but still sturdy. Moderate foxing throughout. Text is in double numbered columns.

Paris, Franciscus Muguet, 1663, in-folio, 40 x 27 cm, (16) nn pp + 321 pp + (1)(bl) (= tomus primus) ; 399 pp + (1)nn pp (privilegium) (= tomus secundus). Two parts bound in one volume, complete. Title page of vol.I printed in red & black and with large wood-engraved vignet. The title page contains a manuscript ex-libris from an unidentified Jesuit College (made illegible). '' Collegii XXXXX Societatis Jesu Bibliotheca Majorj''. With printed ex-libris of Nordkirchen (Arenberg). Bound in contemporary full calf. Binding with some traces of use but on the whole a very fine preserved copy, with only a few old clear waterstains at the end of part II. The author became bishop after his wife who gave him four children had died. On request of cardinal Richelieu he composed this theological-historical study on the Gallican (French) catholic church (with the ''hidden'' purpose to stress the differences with the Roman Catholic Church). The first 4 parts were published in 1641 and promptly put on the ''Index librorum prohibitorum'' by Rome. In 1663, his secretary Etienne Baluze gave a complete edition of the work (8 books in two parts). He had inherited the archives of Pierre de Marca (died in 1662). Fine copy of a rare work on the relation between the French Catholic Church (Gallican) with the Roman Catholic Church.
