Bound in later hal…f deep green calf over marbled boards. On the spine, five raised bands. Title and author gilt to morocco in the second panel. All edges of the text-block speckled red and glazed. A little scuffed at the extremities. Peripheral tanning throughout, with foxing just to the first two leaves. Offsetting from the plates. Ink-stamp of the King's Inns Library, Dublin to the verso of the title-page and to the final page of text. William Beattie Booth (ca. 1804-1874) was a corresponding member of the Horticultural Society of London, listed in the publication (Transactions of the Horticultural Society of London, volume 7 (1830), pp. 519-562) of his paper on the camellia, read in two sessions in 1829, as a "garden clerk." Thus covered in dirt, Booth wrote with particular authority on the Asian genus -- with the leaves of Camellia sinensis being used for tea -- that was so eagerly sought in Britain and in Europe for its ornamental use. Whereas the THSL article was illustrated with just one plate (drawn by "Mrs Withers"), the present volume boasts 40 plates after Alfred Chandler (1804-1896), a nurseryman whose illustrations belong to the heraldic rather than the naturalistic school of flower portraiture. Bibliographers have identified three issues: uncolored and two with color, one more elaborately so. The de luxe issue is in some places tied to large paper, in others to gum arabic and still others to the use of opaque pigments (i.e., gouache). The present example is amply margined, with many preserved deckles at the lower edge, and richly deploys gouache (Dunthorne's criterion). It should be noted that the works ends with "END OF VOL. I" although vol. II was never published; some trial sheets of a proposed second volume have since been identified. The King's Inns in Dublin is the oldest law school in Ireland, and the sole Inn of Court (i.e., professional organization, not unlike a guild, to which all barristers must belong in order to practice) for the Bar of Ireland. Its library -- including of non-legal books, such as the present volume -- expanded considerably in the XVIIIc; by 1972 the Inns chose to deaccession legal books in order to raise funds for the maintenance of its core collection. One of finest works on camellias, here in its most desirable state. Described by Wilfred Blunt as 'handsome and rare', with magnificent plates after the drawings of Alfred Chandler 'beautifully coloured with opaque pigments' (Dunthorne), the work was available in three issues: uncoloured, coloured, or -as in this example- coloured and highly finished with gum arabic. Chandler's drawings were mostly based on examples of camellia grown by at the nursery at Vauxhall run by his father. The Camellia was first introduced into Europe by Lord Petre in 1739, and the work includes Japanese, Chinese and English-bred varieties. Beautiful evergreen shrubs, sometimes growing into small trees, they are found in eastern and southern Asia, from the Himalayas east to Japan and Indonesia. The best known species, albeit not necessarily known consciously, is the Camellia sinensis, the tea plant, of major commercial importance because tea is made from its leaves. While the finest teas are produced by C. sinensis thanks to millennia of selective breeding of this species, many other camellias can be used to produce a similar beverage. For example, in some parts of Japan, tea made from C. sasanqua leaves is popular. Intended to be a two-volume work, the second volume was never published. "Handsome and rare" (Blunt). - Die Tafeln beruhen überwiegend auf Zeichnungen aus der Sammlung des Vaters von Alfred Chandler (1804-1896), Inhaber der Gärtnerei Chandler in Vauxhall, bei dem Alfred mitarbeitete. - William Beattie Booth (um 1804-1874) wurde als führender Experte für Kamelien anerkannt. Er hatte als geschätzter Gärtner den Status eines korrespondierenden Mitglieds an der "London Horticultural Society" (heute "Royal Horticultural Society") und führte in den Veröffentlichungen sein schlichtes Kürzel "Garden Clerk" (Garten-Sekretär). - Die Ausgabe ist in drei Varianten erschienen: "with uncoloured plates, coloured plates, and more highly finished coloured plates on large paper" (Great Flower Books). Vorliegendes Exemplar gehört zur dritten und schönsten Variante, denn dort werden die Camelliae auf den großformatigen Tafeln nahezu plastisch in feinstem Kolorit mit deckenden Farben dargestellt. - Die ursprüngliche Namensgebung "Camellia" durch Carl von Linné ist zu Ehren des Naturkundlers, Arztes und Jesuiten Georg Joseph Kamel (1661-1706) gewählt worden, der erstmals eine systematische Beschreibung der Pflanzenwelt der Philippinen verfaßte und wohl die Camellia japonica kannte (siehe Peper, Klaus: Georg Joseph Kamel: Apothecarius, medicus, botanicus. Homburg 1997). - Die vorliegende Ausgabe umfaßt 32 der 40 Tafeln und den vollständigen Text zu den 40 beschriebenen Arten oder Sorten der Kamelien, wobei die Camellia japonica in der Anzahl überwiegt und mit zusammen 16 Sorten aus China und 19 englisch Zuchtsorten dominiert, außerdem sind die Camelliae Maliflora, Oleifera, reticulata und Sasanqua ebenfalls enthalten. Das Werk endet mit "Propagation and Culture, &c." (S. 41-48). - Obwohl bei Nachkommen der Familie Chandler 1942 Fragmente eines 2. Bandes (dat. 1837; mit Tafeln 41-44) gefunden worden, hat es den Anschein, daß sie nie veröffentlicht worden (siehe Great Flower Books). - Bedauerlicherweise fehlen 8 Tafeln: Nr. 4 (Camellia Reticulata), 12 (Japonica Variegata), 19 (Jap. Paeoniflora Rosea), 20 (Jap. Althaeaflora), 21 (Jap. Anemoniflora Alba.), 26 (Jap. Elegans), 32 (Jap. Speciosa) und 36 (Jap. Rosa-Sinensis), eine neunte Tafel (Nr. 40) ist durch Kinderhand nahezu unbrauchbar bemalt. - Einband etwas berieben, Ecken bestoßen. 2 Tafeln am Rand gelöst (Nr. 3 u. 9), lose beiliegend. A presentation copy, signed by Booth on the title-page. Contemporary half black morocco over brown cloth. Gilt lettering on spine. Red endpapers. Cloth a bit sunned and with some staining and rubbing. Old ink gift inscription on title-page. A few instances of residue from the tissue guards being adhered in small flecks to the gum Arabic of the occasional plate. Overall an extremely beautiful color-plate book with very vivid and bright examples of beautiful camellias. "In the 'Horticultural Society's Transactions' for 1830, Mr. William Beattie Booth A.L.S., Garden Clerk to the Society, contributed a descriptive list of the Camellias then known, naming twenty-five varieties and the same writer furnished the descriptions for the admirable illustrations of Camellias by Mr Alfred Chandler issued between 1830 and 1832.
