Five copper engraved fold-out plates, plate four in photocopy. Errata list. Cotes, an English mathematician who edited the second edition of Newton's PRINCIPIA, made advances in the theory of logarithms, the integral calculus and in numerical methods, particularly interpolation. His quadrature formulas known as Newton-Cotes formulas and first introduced what is known today as Euler's formula. He was the first Plumian Professor and Cambridge University from 1707 until his death at the age of thirty-three. This work was held in great estimation. Cotes genius earned encomiums from his contemporaries and successors; Sir Isaac Newton said, "If Mr. Cotes had lived, we should have known something." Two inked signatures at title page; two ownership stamps, text and plates clean, slight loss back cover upper corner. Contemporary full brown calf, double gilt border panels, rebacked, red leather spine label printed in gilt. Very good.

"These lectures were among the earliest of their kind given in England. The appendix contains the only English translation of Newton's 'Scale of Degrees of Heat', his law of cooling. Also a paper by Halley and two by Dr. Jurin." (Biblio. mechanica, pp. 79-80). The editor of Cotes posthumous lectures was Robert Smith (1689-1768) who published his large and authoritative, 'A compleat system of opticks' in the same year. Babson/Newton, no. 343.

First 2 leaves and several corners a little browned and soiled, small piece missing from corner of first and last leaf. Good modern half calf antique. FIRST EDITION of the scientific experiments demonstrated publicly by Francis Hauksbee (1688?1763), nephew of the instrument maker of the same name who was giving similar lectures in about 1705. George Wilson was lecturing on chemistry around the turn of the century, and John Harris began lecturing on mathematics in about 1698, and these were the earliest scientific lectures in London, but the present lectures by Hauksbee appear to be the earliest to be published. ?Hauksbee?became very active in the lecturing world, advertising courses given with Whiston at Crane Court. His co-operation with Whiston, who like Hauksbee failed to obtain the distinction of FRS, continued for many years? At least until 1727 Hauksbee was still giving ?A Course of Mechanical and Experimental Philosophy? with Whiston, in which Newton's improvements to the reflecting telescope were demonstrated, along with magnetical experiments and entertainments? (ODNB). There are four issues listed in ESTC, of which the present is the rarest (2 copies); leaves 12?14 are misnumbered 21?23, the catchword on p. 1 is ?An?, and the last page is numbered 24.
