He was educated in Norwich and Hertford College, Oxford (B. A.). In 1898, he entered I.C.S. He worked as Magistrate and Collector in Bengal for quite a few years. Later, he served in General and Revenue Department in Bengal as a civil servant. He got retired in 1924 as C.I.E. During his lifetime, he published several books, such as Bengal District Gazetteers, Santal Parganas,andPurnea. He was the editor of the whole series. Facsimile Indian reprint of the first edition of 1909. xii, 189pp. The preparation of district, provincial and Imperial gazetteers was set up by the Raj, and the preparation of the work undertaken by British civilians in India. District Officers of Deputy Commissioners assisted in the collection of material. These Official records provide a wealth of material on all aspects of the regions covered, and include detailed information about the inhabitants, their way of life, habits, customs, religious rites and rituals. The Howrah District Gazetteer was prepared by L.S.S. O'Malley and Monmohan Chakravarti and first published by the Bengal Secretariat Book Depot in 1909. The book is bound in the original green cloth covered boards with gold titling on the spine. The case of the book is in very good condition with bumping to the spine ends. The contents are tight and clean with bubbling to the fixed endpapers, but this appears to be a production fault. There is a previous owner's monogram stamp on the bottom corner of the front free endpaper. The unclipped dustwrapper has shelf wear with some soiling. Small pieces are missing from the rear and bottom front corners and bottom of the spine and slightly larger pieces are missing from the top front corner and top rear edge. Abourt 1 1/2" is missing from the top of the spine. There are a few tears of up to about 1/2" on the edges and most of these have been repaired on the reverse with tape. The wrapper is in an easily removed clear plastic protective cover.…
