In den WarenkorbHardcover. Zustand: Very Good. No Jacket. Second Edition. First printing of the second edition, with Second Edition on the title page. The second of three separate volumes in the series "Hours in a Library". ***Very good in dark-brown cloth-covered boards with gilt titles and decorative borders to the spine, with a gilt circular device on the front board. The gilt on the spine and front board is still beautifully bright. The boards are just slightly marked, but are generally very clean. No bumps or creases - just slight creasing at the top and tail of the spine, and some light rubbing to the corner tips, which are slightly creased. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. Page block edges nice and clean with no foxing. Internally also very good with dark-brown endpapers. No serious creases or tears, except for a poorly cut open page at p.347/8 (please see scans). There is an ink ownership name and place to the half-title page, and some old bookseller's notes in pencil on the opposite blank page. No foxing to the pages which remain clean. Importantly, there is no splitting to the hinges. No dustwrapper. ***195mm x 135mm. 393 pages, plus a 4pp publisher's catalogue at the back of the book. ***Contents: I. Sir Thomas Browne, II. Jonathan Edwards, III. William Law, IV. Horace Walpole, V. Dr. Johnson's Writings, VI. Crabbe's Poetry, VII. William Hazlitt, VIII. Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This three-volume set brings together a diverse selection of essays by Sir Leslie Stephen (1832-1904), author, philosopher and literary critic. Educated at Eton and Cambridge, he was the founding editor of the Dictionary of National Biography and father of Virginia Woolf and Vanessa Bell. He wrote critiques of many authors and works, which were published in periodicals such as the Cornhill Magazine (of which he was editor from 1871), Fraser's Magazine and the Fortnightly Review. The Second Series, first published in 1876, includes commentaries on the works of Sir Thomas Browne, Samuel Johnson, Benjamin Disraeli and Horace Walpole, and the poetry of George Crabbe. Stephen sets each writer's work in its historical context, comparing it to that of other significant authors of its era and evaluating its philosophical and moral qualities. His articles remain of great interest to scholars of early modern, Romantic and Victorian literature.
