Zustand: Fair. 450 x 545 mm., early wash colour, with some repair to tears left and right margins just into the image and one opposing wormhole near lower side margins, otherwise in good condition. A fine large-scale sea chart of the southern tip of South America published in the 'Zee Atlas' by Pieter Goos. It extends northwards to the 30th degree south including the 'Rio de la Plata'. It includes much of present-day Argentina and Chile. The southwest coast of Tierra del Fuego is left incomplete. The 'Seybold' islands are in fact Jason islands off the northwest coast of the Falklands. They record to visit by the Sebald de Weert (1567-1603) in 1600. The map is adorned with a compass rose, sailing ship and two ornate cartouche.Pieter Goos (c.1615-75) was one of the most significant booksellers in Amsterdam during the second half of the seventeenth century. The son of mapmaker Abraham Goos, he was also an accomplished engraver as well as bookseller. "His first pilot book was the Zee-Spiegel, 1650, covering largely European waters. The Zee Atlas covered the whole world. They were all well produced and sold as much to the merchant, as the sea-going pilot." (Burden). Provenance: Richard B. In den WarenkorbWithout titlepage (that has a portrait of the author on the back side), but the colophon states: Amsterdam, Ian Iacobsz Bouman, 1651, 8vo., half parchment and marbled paper binding, 56 pp., illustrated with 4 small woodcuts in the text and 6 double paged illustrations outside the collation. These illustrations are pasted in and all but one are woodcuts. The one between page 38 and 39 doensn't seem to belong in this book. It is an etching instead of a woodcut and small tears are diguised with snippets of another print (not the print that should be there). This edition of 1651 is not mentioned in STCN or WorldCat, but was found in the collection of the Maritiem Museum. The print that is missing in our copy is discussed on maritiemdigitaal.nl (Hoornse Eylandt). The book has some smudged pages with greyish stains, but the woodcuts are beautiful and the bookblock solid without any torn pages. Very rare edition of the marvellous journey by Schouten. Lit.: Tiele 989, Du Rietz 522, Muller 1955f, Cox I 41 et al. "This was one of the most remarkable voyages ever undertaken and contributed much to the science of cartography, while the numerous versions in other languages attest to its popularity, indicating how much the new passage into the Sputh Seas was appreciated." (Cox).…
