Slight wear to edge and corners, a bit more at spine. A few pages have tiny tears at edges. All 15 numbers bound in one volume, all yellow wraps (front and rear) included. 478 p. w/ footnotes. The only volume of a projected larger history, this work covers the early years of Delaware down to approx. 1664. Unfortunately the work was not enough of a financial success for more volumes.…

Three quarter black leather and blue cloth with five raised bands on the spine and gilt lines on the covers and gilt letters on the spine. Top edge gilt and a blue ribbon marker. Some wear to extremities with the corners rubbed through, slightly rubbed along the spine edges, leather and cloth clean, gilt bight, else very good to near fine with no internal markings, all published issues bound in and with many pages uncut. No dust jacket. Francis Vincent [1822-1884} was a larger-than- life public figure in Delaware, who wrote an unfinished history of the state (this volume!). Born in England, Vincent came to Wilmington, Delaware, as a child and at age 17, became a printer's apprentice in the shop of John Newton Harker, then proprietor of Delaware Gazette. Six years later in 1845, he was publishing his own paper, Blue Hen's Chicken, in partnership with William Jeandell. His paper advocated liberal causes, including some which were radical for his day, e.g., abolition of pillory and the whipping post, abolition of public hangings, shortening the work day to 10 hours, abolition of slavery, abrogation of laws that discriminated against free blacks, and public referendums for important laws. Vincent authored A HISTORY OF THE STATE OF DELAWARE which was printed in parts, which are here bound into one volume. It was discontinued after 478 pages for lack of commercial success, bringing it to the year 1664. In 1873, the legislature appropriated $500 to encourage resumption of printing on "the united recommendation of all newspapers in the state" and Vincent is called "Historian of Delaware" in the bill. However, no further issues were published. The Dutch were the first Europeans to actually occupy te land beginning in 1624. Swedish immigration began in 1638, but New Sweden was incorporated by force into New Netherland Colony in 1655. This is an important history for every collector of Delaware books. Howes V-110. …
