First edition, first impression. This surprisingly uncommon monograph surveys judicial punishment in Britain from medieval methods of torture to early modern witch trials and the 20th-century reformist movement. Ives was himself a notable reformist, of the prison system generally and the criminalization of homosexuality in particular. To this end, he assisted the lawyers of Oscar Wilde during the playwright's destructive trial. Ives (1867-1950) established the secretive Order of the Chaeronea, Britain's first support group for gay men, in 1893, and associated with writers including Wilde, Radclyffe Hall, and George Bernard Shaw. "Ives saw research, study, and the dissemination of information as crucial if public opinion was to be changed" (ODNB), leading him to publish his own monographs on criminology. Octavo. Original blue cloth, spine lettered in gilt, bottom edge uncut. Publisher's 48-page catalogue at end. 1944 Christmas gift inscription on front free endpaper. Small wear to bumped spine ends, faint mark on front cover, foxing to prelims, else clean. A very good copy.
