Much of this has really been owing to the unexplored and undescribed condition of such regions, but something also to the overwhelming prominence of the great northern range, which rivets the attention of teachers of geography and their pupils, and also, from the exigencies of the art of cartography, renders it almost impossible to delineate on ordinary maps of India the features of inferior ranges. In the very centre of India there exists a considerable region to which the term Highlands, which the author has adopted for the title, is strictly applicable; and in which are numerous peaks and ranges, for which the term "mountain" would, in any other country, be used. Several of the great rivers of India have their first sources in this elevated region, and pour their waters into the sea on either side of the peninsula to the north the Són commingling with the Ganges, to the east the Mahánadi, flowing independently to the Bay of Bengal, to the south some of the principal feeders of the Godávari, and to the west the Narbadá and the Tápti, taking parallel courses to the Arabian Gulf. It forms the central and culminating section of a ridge of elevated country which stretches across the peninsula, from near Calcutta to near Bombay, and separates Northern India, or Hindostan proper, from the Deccan, or country of the south. The traveller by the new Great Indian Peninsular Railway from Bombay to Calcutta, after some 275 miles of his journey, will come to a point where the line branches into two. The northern branch leads him up the Narbadá valley, and so, by Alahabád and the Gangetic valley, to the City of Palaces. If he takes the southern branch instead, he will be landed at Nágpúr, a city in the very heart of India, and its present terminal station.…

The book covers the influx of migrants, the impact of Rajput and Mughal rule under Akbar, history of aborigine communities such as Kols, Bhils, Korkes, Baigas, Gonds, etc. It contains the flora and fauna life in Narbada Valley, Mahadeo Hills, Tapti, Higher Narabada Valley, and Mahanadi regions. Interestingly, the author has provided a vivid description of the customs of native tribes of this region, the deities worshipped by the Central Indian tribes, marital and other societal customs, and the influence of Hinduism, particularly Shaivism. Animals such as, tigers, and ele­phants, which are found in abundance in this region, are discussed. This book is highly beneficial to anthropologists and sociologists interested in tribal communities and their lives. About the Author James Forsyth (1838-1871) was an English traveler and a civil servant of the English East India Company. He was appointed as the settlement officer and deputy commissioner of Nimar in modern-day Madhya Pradesh. The book contains numerous illustrations and maps to make it more interesting. For many years this book was the complete guide and exposition of the central highlands of India. About the Author/:-James Forsyth (18381871) was an English traveller in India. After receiving a university education in England, and taking his degree of M.A., Forsyth entered the civil service of the East India Company, and went out to India as assistant conservator and acting conservator of forests. He was attached to the Bengal staff corps, and made a complete tour of the Central Provinces of India in 186264. He reached Amarkantak, near the sources of the Narmada River, the Mahanadi River, and the Son River. Forsyth acquired wide reputation as a hunter, and in 1862 published a treatise on the Sporting Rifle and its Projectiles. In 1870 he prepared an account of his explorations, with which he returned to England towards the close of that year. Arrangements were made for the publication of the work, but the author died while the sheets were passing through the press.
