The revised anniversary edition of one of the most influential catalogues in the literature of scientific bibliography and book collecting. Heralds of Science presents two hundred books and pamphlets selected by the engineer, industrialist, and pioneering scientific bibliophile Bern Dibner (1897-1988) as the essential monuments of scientific discovery represented in his celebrated collection. The catalogue is arranged by subject in eleven sections -- Astronomy, Botany, Chemistry, Electricity and Magnetism, General Science, Geology, Mathematics, Medicine, Physics, Technology, and Zoology -- and traces the printed record of scientific progress from the Renaissance to the modern age. Among the earliest works described are Regiomontanus's edition of Ptolemy's Almagest (1496), one of the great monuments of Renaissance astronomy, and Rheticus's Narratio Prima (1540), the first printed exposition of Copernican astronomy. The sequence continues through the decisive achievements of modern science, concluding with the landmark 1953 publications of James Watson and Francis Crick on the double-helical structure of DNA. Each entry includes a complete bibliographical description, a concise historical commentary explaining the importance of the work, and, where relevant, references to associated editions and related material in the Dibner and Burndy collections. Numerous illustrations reproduce title pages, portraits, scientific diagrams, and other significant features from the original books. The volume opens with Dibner's own preface and notes on the formation of the collection, followed by Robert P. Multhauf's historical essay placing the Dibner Library within the tradition of scientific book collecting. Dibner's achievement was extraordinary: beginning as a self-made engineer and inventor, he assembled over approximately five decades one of the greatest private collections ever formed in the history of science, eventually numbering some ten thousand volumes. In 1976 he donated the core "Heralds of Science" collection to the Smithsonian Institution, where it became the foundation of the Dibner Library of the History of Science and Technology.
