Philp Henslowes unique Diary gives access to the world of Shakespeare it records theatrical enterprises including many plays, amongst which are Shakespeares Taming of the Shrew, Titus Andronicus and Henry VI Part 1. Henslowe and his soninlaw actor Edward Alleyne built London theatres The Rose, The Fortune and The Hope, ran the most successful acting companies including The Lord Admirals Men of which Shakespeare was a member and The Lord Stranges Men. The Dairy also records receipts from play performances, expenditures, payments and notes on hiring actors. Previous speculation dismissed Henslowe as ignorant, disorderly and grasping, later he is shown to be a benign and efficient businessman. Henslowe was hilariously portrayed in the hit film Shakespeare in Love. The volume in hand, despite lacking spine, is a great addition to the library of reader, scholar and collector alike available here at a reduced price due to damage.
