El fotógrafo del Área de la Bahía Henry Wessel (1942?2018) se contó entre las filas del grupo, junto con Robert Adams, Bernd y Hilla Becher, Lewis Baltz, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott y Stephen Shore. Conocido por sus imágenes en blanco y negro del oeste americano, el trabajo de Wessel se alinea estrechamente con la descripción de Jensen. These anonymous dwellings cloaked in shadows or bathed in the moon's incandescent glow, conjure the penumbral settings of film noir, as does Wessel's use of light and shadow to illuminate the shifty nature of things that appear to be self evident. The exhibition which was held in the George Eastman House in Rochester, New York, is widely regarded as one of the style-defining and most influential in the history of photography. The show brought together Robert Adams, Lewis Baltz, Bernd and Hilla Becher, Joe Deal, Frank Gohlke, Nicholas Nixon, John Schott, Stephen Shore, and Henry Wessel (Jr.). Signaling the emergence of a new approach to landscape, the exhibition effectively gave a name to a movement. Even today, the catchphrase New Topographics is used to characterize the work of artists not yet born when the exhibition was held. New Topographics has since come to be understood as marking a paradigm shift. The show occurred just as photography took its place within the contemporary art world. Arguably the last traditionally photographic style, New Topographics was also the first photo-conceptual style.
