Appendices. Bibliography. The excavation of Oriyo Timbo marked the beginning of a substantial research partnership between the Gujarat State Department of Archaeology and The University Museum of the University of Pennsylvania. The site located in Chiroda Village Gadhada Bhavnagar District of Gujarat State was first visited by archeologists in 1971. This report is a review of the one season of excavation at the site and is complemented by a more detailed study of the animal bones especially an analysis of the annular rings in mammal teeth prepared by Paul Rissman. The problem orientations which took the excavation team to Oriyo have to do with the long term interests in ancient Indian systems of settlement and subsistence. The site as known from the surface sampling of Lustrous Red Ware was particularly attractive since it seems to represent a contrast to the more conventional village farming community frequently excavated within the Indian context. Oriyo seems to have been occupied seasonally and was the home of pastoralists who may have under taken a bit of cultivation. The presence of the microlithic occupation below the Lustrous Red Ware camp was a complete surprise and played no role in the original problem formulation but is one of he major insights to come from the excavation at Oriyo and is justification for the contemplated return to the site for further excavation. This report reviews the findings of the short investigation of this protohistoric settlement. To give the reader a sense of what was accomplished in this short campaign an introduction to the three major findings can be highlighted here 1 the first of these is the investigation of pastoralists camp and the archaeological methodology dealing with the way in which Dr Rissman investigated pastoralism and seasonality at the site 2 the results of the paleobotanical investigation at Oriyo while somewhat overshadowed by later work at Rojdi Weber 1989 is nonetheless significant since Rojdi was not occupied during Lustrous Red Ware times and Oriyo informs us of this time period finally 3 there is the vastly interesting although largely uninvestigated microlithic component top Oriyo on which some speculative thoughts will be offered following a review of the first two research objectives. The time spent at Oriyo while it was very short was a considerable success. It led the team to answer some questions but like all good sciences it also raised new questions and unanticipated intellectual problems and the need for productive work in the future. Hardcover. Zustand: New. In September 1924, John Marshall, Director General of the Archaeological Survey of India, informed the world about the existence of the Indus (Harappan) civilization: some 4,500 years old, as ancient as Mesopotamia, as grand as ancient Egypt, and a part of the Bronze Age trading network. How did the Harappan civilization contribute to later Vedic and Tantrik thought? Did the Harappans follow monastic ideals that later became part of Buddhism and Jainism? Was their script like today's emojis, conveying ideas? Why did they have images of rivalry but no images of war and no images of romance either? Why did the cities disappear while the villages continued to flourish for some time? An eventful century later, Devdutt Pattanaik uses the lens of mythology to reflect on this most mysterious of 'peaceful' civilizations, now spread across geographies in India and Pakistan. A medley of text and illustrations, Ahimsa draws attention to how much Harappan memory persists in our lives today.

One chapter conventionally incorporates a discrete review of the relevant pottery typologies. Details of selective important sites are given for discerning readers. Separate independent chapters deal the art architecture craft activities/specialisations trade and chronology in the light of fresh researches. The volume critically evaluates or enumerates the homogeneity thesis and elaborates upon the heterogeneity enshrined in differential growth of the Harappan civilization. Dynamic forces of convergence and multiplication intertwined to produce the unique cultural ethos with regional variations. The cohesiveness was in the main provided by closely interacting (communicating) diverse settlement matrices. The civilization also prospered in harsher (semi arid) conditions and the concerted agricultural innovations ensured steady supply of even surplus grains. The arrested Harappan urbanisation laced with continued strong rural flavour acted both as cause and effect when viewed as coordinated processes. 320 pp.

Hardcover. Zustand: New. The misrepresentations about the identity of the Rigveda Aryan people , and the western propagated theories of the Aryan invasion of or immigration to India, have been the subject of much discussion by both national and international thinkers in the recent years. The Subject is serious and deeply linked to identity, and also concerns what we teach through our History Text books. This Gyan Samhita' brings to you the papers presented by a galaxy of distinguished national and international scholars., who participated at the International conference to discuss various aspect like the origin and identity of the Arayans, the Indus- Sarasvati Civilization, and the Archaeological findings that demolish the theory of Aryan Invasion of India. Thus, a spatial chronological study of the Rigveda data on the hand and of the rigveda data on the one hand and of the Indus sarasvati civilization on the other, to find linkages between the Rigveda and the Indus Saraswati civilization was taken up. There was general consensus, and it was firmly established that the Rigveda people were indigenous and neither ' invades' nor ' immigrants'. The Result of the textual researches and archaeological discovers have not yet reached the International forum, much less the text books. It was felt that the time is ripe to hold an International Seminar on the subject, so that the new Knowledge is duly disseminated not only within India but also beyond its frontiers . the Knowledge sharing by a large number of world renowned Archaeologists, Historians, Philosophers Ideologists make this a very valuable book of reference and study.

Summary:"The text represents some ten years of work on the writing of the Harappan or Indus Civilization. It began out of frustration with the inability to more than record the seal-tablets and graffiti emanating from excavations at the Harappan site of Allahdino near Karachi. The fact has been that of all of the primary civilizations of the Old World only that of India has not been deciphered. Without the knowledge of the writing, archaeologists are terribly handicapped in identifying that civilization's place, not only in terms of subcontinental history, but in the larger history of civilization itself." "Over the years the research has led up many blind alleys adding only frustration on the one side, but also evoking a very real admiration for the similar efforts of others who were and are working on the same problem. The problems of historical linguistics or philology have been slow to solve but those solutions are essential to any decipherment." "The Harappan script is now well on its way to a final decipherment because of these efforts, as this book demonstrates. One can at last, move ahead in the understanding of the significant culture of India's remote past."--BOOK JACKET.
