Of these, nearly 600 were handicapped by physical disability of one kind or another-sometimes complicated by severe educational retardation-while 400 were young people who had been attending special schools for the mentally handicapped. Previous studies in the city had shown that too often physically handicapped children fared badly after they left school; some fell into unemployment and many of those who were employed were in jobs quite unsuitable. The aim in this present work has been to see what could be done to improve upon former findings-primarily by helping those young people to obtain work in which they would have a reasonable chance of being able to continue successfully.
