Soft cover. Zustand: Good. 3rd Edition. Good condition. Wear to book corners and edges. Previous owner has signed inside cover and stamped inside half-title page. Foxing to foredges. Bend to back cover left corner. The Hand that Signed the Paper tells the story of Vitaly, a Ukrainian peasant, who endures the destruction of his village and family by Stalin's communism. He welcomes the Nazi invasion in 1941 and willingly enlists in the SS Death Squads to take horrifying revenge against those he perceives to be his persecutors. The initial controversy over this book stemmed from allegations of antisemitism. The second controversy, which overlapped the first, pertained less to the book than its author. The book's publicity stressed Demidenko's Ukrainian ancestry, supposedly the source for her controversial material.None of that was true. Demidenko was, in fact, born Helen Darville, the daughter of English parents - and the revelations about her extraordinary deception embarrassed the book's supporters, many of whom had relied on claims about "authenticity" in their defences of it. (The Guardian website)Some books express views that are offensive. These views are not the views of The Book Merchant. This book should be seen in its historical context as a literary subdiffusion.

In den Warenkorbpaperback. Zustand: Good. Our good condition books are generally good for reading but not for gifting or collecting. They could have imperfections such as creasing, fanning, inscriptions, margin notes, yellowing, staining on edge or cover or pages, bumps, scuffs, etc etc (sometimes multiple of these). It's a wide category that encompasses anything that isn't almost-new down to anything that is slightly better than poor. We would NOT recommend gifting Good books - these should be considered reading copies. Our books are dispatched from a Yorkshire former cotton mill. We list via barcode/ISBN so please note that the images are stock images and may not be the exact copy you receive, furthermore the details about edition and year might not be accurate as many publishers reuse the same ISBN for multiple editions and as we simply scan a barcode or enter an ISBN we do not check the validity of the edition data when listing. If you're looking for an exact edition please don't order (at least not without checking with us first, although we don't always have time to check). We aim to dispatch prompty, the service used will depend on order value and book size. We can ship to most countries, see our shipping policies. Payment is via Abe only.

Three items relating to Rumer Godden's contribution to the Cancer Relief Macmillan fund-raising book, First Memories of the Famous (1996), comprising: an undated one-page hand-written account in blue ink on Godden's 'Ardnacloich, Moniaive'-headed paper: cream, laid paper with watermarks, printed in black, folded with a little creasing; one-line postcard, again on Godden's personal stationary, addressed to Jill Bernhardi, wondering: "Will this do?" and highlighting, "It is true"; plus, first edition of First Memories of the Famous: perfectly-bound paperback (21 x 14.8cm), pp. ix, [i], 68, incl. b/w illustrations. Glossy, illustrated paper wrappers. Gentlest edgewear, faint band of sunning to rear wrapper, else, clean and tight. Near fine A powerful and affecting first memory, penned in Rumer Godden's hand on her personal stationary and reproduced in the 1996 fund-raising book for Cancer Relief Macmillan, First Memories of the Famous, with a signed postcard; Godden's "very first memory [.] gave [her] a sign or a symbol I have managed to follow all my life": she recalls the gift of "a tiny doll sent to me by [her sister] Jon from England", which "is not like any other doll" [.] because "every time she is knocked over straight away and by herself she stands up again." Godden notes that despite now understanding the its mechanism, the doll "remains vivid because again and again I have been knocked over flat yet, yet mysteriously and by myself have managed to stand up again." A prolific and prize-winning novelist, of both children's and adult fiction, Rumer Godden (19071998) was in her late 80s and living in Dumfriesshire when she sketched this memory, which still "flashe[d] brilliantly clean". A fiercely independent woman "prickly and indomitable, always went her own way" Godden spent the first half of her life in colonial India, as the memory suggests. She trained as a dance teacher and in 1930 "to the alarm of her circle [.] she opened the Peggie Godden School of Dance in Calcutta [sic], where she unconventionally accepted both Indian and Eurasian pupils" (ODNB). Six years later, and briefly back in the UK, pregnant with her second child, she made her name with Black Narcissus (1939), later brought to the the screen by Powell and Pressburger in an adaptation apparently "much despised by Godden" (ibid). Later still, she moved to the UK and for a decade followed fellow authors Henry James and E F Benson in renting Lamb Cottage in Rye. Dolls also feature centrally in a number of Godden's best-loved children's books, including The Dolls' House (1947) and The Story of Holly and Ivy (1958).

Some light creasing and some short closed tears to the portfolio wrapper edges. Some light age related markings to the wrappers. The complete set of the 40 woodcut proofs on japon are each captioned, numbered, and signed by Frederick Carter in pencil. The illustrations are exactly the same as those appearing in the book. Some of the plates are a little creased at the edges and have some sporadic light spotting and toning to the edges. A very scarce copy of Carter's book of alchemical illustrations, with the rare large format portfolio which is one of only 25 such sets issued. Frederick Carter (1883-1967) started producing prints in 1908, and illustrated various books and periodicals between 1914 and 1937 including 'The Cafe Royal Cocktail Book'. 'The Dragon of the Alchemists' was first published by Elkin Mathews as a collection of esoteric essays elucidating the symbolic illustrations, accompanied by an Arthur Machen introduction: 'The only way of telling the truth is by means of the symbol: the part that is put for the whole; that whole which for our lips is ineffable. The world is a cypher. He does best who hints most closely at the secret message latent in the signs exhibited to us.' Frederick Carter became a mystic symbolist artist, involved with Aleister Crowley and worked on illustrations for D.H. Lawrence's 'Apocalypse'. He was also a friend of Austin Osmond Spare and helped with his theories of automatic drawing. From 1922 he taught etching at Liverpool School of Art and during the 1930's he abandoned printmaking for writing but continued to paint until the late 1950's. His work is in the collections of the British Museum and The V&A. As a friend of D. H. Lawrence, he sent the manuscript of 'The Dragon of the Alchemist's to Lawrence for his comments. (Horne p. 138). Complete portfolios such as this one are extremely scarce and rarely appear on the market. More images available on request. Ashton rare Books welcomes direct contact.

In den Warenkorbin the foreground is a well attired man talking to a woman similarly attired. The composition of the scene suggests that the well dressed couple in the foreground may well be the sheep farmer and his wife visiting their flock in the evening as the sun goes down over the horizon in the background. It was common practise for shepherd's to wear stilts in areas of grazing land that were subject to flooding, the flute playing may be to ward off foxes with the approach of night. Various sizes. Various sizes. Daniel Boone (1734-1820), born near Reading, Pennsylvania, is known as a great pioneer and Indian fighter. His family left for North Carolina in 1750 and settled in Buffalo Lick the following year. Boone spent several years working for his father, a blacksmith and stock-raiser, and then in 1755 began his travels when he joined a North Carolina contingent in the Braddock campaign. Stories he heard from his companion, John Finley, filled him with desire for pioneering the Kentucky wilderness, but after a disastrous battle, he returned home and married Rebeccah Bryan, a neighbor. In 1767, Boone and a couple of men headed westward to explore. They returned home and that same year Finley happened by and Boone and Finley made new plans to head for Kentucky. They commenced their journey in 1769, set up camp at Station Camp Creek, and after many adventures returned home in 1771. From that point forward, Boone set out for the west on a regular basis, accompanying various parties and settlers on their journeys. He brought his family to settle in Kentucky in 1775, and was made a captain and then a major in the militia once the region became a county of Virginia. He battled the Indians, was captured by the Shawnee in 1778, but later escaped and continued to accompany new settlers into the area. Kentucky was divided into three counties the next year and Boone was made lieutenant-colonel of Fayette County and later chosen as a delegate to the legislature. Boone's skill as a pioneer far outweighed his ability to manage his affairs, for, although he had taken up many tracts of land, they had all been improperly entered and after a series of suits over a number of years, lost all of the land. He left Kentucky and settled in West Virginia, where he was appointed lieutenant-colonel of the county and later selected as its legislative delegate. Around 1789, he moved to Missouri to join his son, Daniel Morgan, where he was soon elected to public office. After Boone's wife died in 1813, he lived mostly at the home of his other son, Nathan. Boone is remembered as a great pioneer for having "the most qualities needed on the frontiercourage in a rare degree, great fortitude, an iron endurance, a mastery of woodcraft, and single expertness with the rifle. He was loyal in friendship, honest, truthful, and modest. He was one of the most respected and beloved of the nation's heroes." (DAB). Each document folded several times, very short minor tears or chipping mostly at folds, overall very good.
