Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - Hampton and Reconstruction, written by Edward Laight Wells, explores the role of Hampton Normal and Agricultural Institute (now Hampton University) in the Reconstruction era following the American Civil War. The book highlights the contributions of Samuel Chapman Armstrong, the founder of Hampton Institute, and the school's mission to educate and uplift African Americans. Wells details the challenges and triumphs of establishing an educational institution for freedmen in the post-war South, emphasizing the importance of industrial and moral training. The narrative provides insights into the social and political dynamics of the Reconstruction period, offering a valuable historical perspective on the efforts to rebuild the nation and integrate African Americans into American society. Buch. Zustand: Neu. Neuware - This post-revisionist study examines the motives and the concerns of the ex-slaves in South Carolina who supported a movement that eventually led to white supremacy.Although most freedmen throughout the states of the former Confederacy were Republicans loyal to the party of the Federal government that had emancipated them, they were factions of African-American voters who aligned themselves with local white Democratic leaders. one such group of black conservatives joined the "Red Shirts," white paramilitary clubs that attempted to restore antebellum values in electing former Confederate general Wade Hampton governor of South Carolina in 1876.Drago's fine analysis recovers and explains this lost aspect of Southern black history. Drawing on primary sources that include testimonies of several black Red Shirts before a Congressional investigation of the election and eleven slave narratives, he de-romanticizes the black experience by examining the relationship between black initiative and southern paternalism.…

First Edition. First printing. Octavo. Red publisher's cloth, pictorial gilt titles to spine and front cover; 238pp; portrait frontispiece; errata slip tipped in at Table of Contents. Rubbing to cloth at edges; rear board slightly spotted; slight sunning to spine; still a tight, sound copy, Very Good. A biography of Lt. General Wade Hampton, C.S.A. (1818-1902), focusing on his period as Governor of South Carolina from 1877-79, during which time he is credited with eradicating the proponents of Radical Reconstruction following the Civil War. The author, a transplanted northerner, fought with the Charleston Light Dragoons during the Civil War and afterwards became one of the largest cotton brokers in the South - as well as a leading advocates for Southern nationalism. We offer this title with the extremely uncommon eight-page publisher's prospectus, which includes portraits Hampton and other prominent Carolinians involved in "the redemption of the State from carpet-bag and scalawag oppression" (quoted from p.1 of text). The prospectus is complete and sound, with a bit of soil to covers, Very Good overall and rarely seen.…
