Uniform matching hard back binding in publisher's original Brunswick green cloth covered boards, blocked and lettered gilt backs, elaborate gilt vignette to the front boards, blind tools to the rear, all page edges gilt, lemon end papers. Quarto 12'' x 10''. Contains 36 tipped-in chromolithograph coloured plates and 36 full page monochrome pictures on thick card stock with hundreds of text monochrome illustrations throughout. Repaired tear to front hinge and top of the spine to volume IX, contents of all nine volumes neatly hand written to the front free end paper of volume IX, some surface marks to the front boards of three volumes, occasional finger marks, without any foxing or age toning to the paper. Publishers' scarlet cloth with gilt titles to spine and gilt device to upper boards, in unclipped cream pictorial dust-jackets also illustrated by Gill. Lower board of "Julius Caesar" stained otherwise cover cloth clean and bright; ownership inscription dated '37 to the same volume otherwise no annotation or inscriptions. Some jackets toned to spine, with a few nicks & creases; minor loss at tail of spine of several volumes over the set. "Julius Caesar" jacket price clipped with paper tape repairs to reverse, 6 cm tear with associated small loss, and stains to rear and "Antony and Cleopatra" repaired to reverse with browned adhesive tape. A very good set in like jackets. Scarce as a complete set in this condition. Heavyweight so a contribution towards increased postage costs will be requested for overseas delivery.

Uniform matching recently rebacked hard back binding in publishers original full brown leather, the spines divided into five panels, red and black morocco lettered labels in the second and fourth, tools to the others, twin parallel line details across the panels, original end papers 32mo. 4½'' x 3¼''. Originally published in 7 volumes as the 'Whittingham Edition' this rather unusual full leather set has been rebacked. The second title pages refer to be published in 7 volumes, however, this set is over 14 volumes, because of this the binder has duplicated 7 volumes with two lots of different tools down the 14 spines, with generic titles to all 14. Illustrated title pages to seven volumes, other illustrations throughout the 14 volumes. From the private library of Thomas Valentine Smith with his bookplate to each front paste down. Thomas Valentine Smith inherited Ardtornish House, Morvern, Lochaber from his father, he was a sportsman and a vicarious adventurer and enjoyed entertaining parties of like-minded guests. [Shakespeare] JOHN BELL EDITION, later printings, mixed issue. 36 of 38 volumes. Duodecimo in half-sheets (16 x 10cm). Most volumes dated 1788 or 1803, with just a few intersectional exceptions. All volumes with two engraved title pages of varying dates ranging from 1784 to 1807, the later ones being printed for John Cawthorn, all with tissue guards. Contemporary quarter pigskin with gilt titles to spines and marbled paper over boards. Quite heavy rubbing and bumping. Eight volumes with some chipping or loss to spine head / tail. Most volumes heavily soiled to spine. Very good. A rare collection. A complex set of books made up from mixed printings of this important early 'cheap' edition, first published in 1774. Missing 'Two Noble Kinsmen' and 'The Merchant of Venice' ('Pericles' and 'Edward III' not then being considered canon). John Bell was a seminal figure in British printing and typography, responsible for dropping the long S, and for developing new popular typefaces.

Forty volumes, "Romeo and Juliet" a reprint, the rest all first edition thus, small 8vo. Title illustrations by Eric Gill. Cloth, d.w.'s browned with some light marks, cup ring to the upper cover of "A Midsummer Night's Dream," some minor loss to the spine ends. A complete set. The New Temple Shakespeare.
