Wood-engraved… headpieces. Fourth (Enlarged) edition of Gee's most influential work, first published in 1729 and reprinted in nine English editions during the eighteenth century. Written against a backdrop of declining exports, decaying agriculture and rising unemployment, the Trade and Navigation is a mercantilist tract arguing that Britain's surest path to wealth lay in restricting the import of goods that could instead be produced at home. The work surveys British trade both historically and region by region, and addresses particular problems (including a chapter on the pernicious influence of French fashion on English manufacture), before turning, in its greater part, to proposed remedies. Chief among these were the transportation of domestic convicts and unemployed poor to solve the colonial labour shortage, the establishment of free ports at Gibraltar and Port Mahon, and the broader encouragement of import-replacing production throughout the plantations. A substantial portion of the book is devoted to the North American colonies and West Indies, with individual chapters on Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, New York and New England, and on the tobacco and sugar trades of the islands. Gee also warns of the political risk of British dependence on Muscovy and Sweden for naval stores such as hemp, flax, pitch and tar. Joshua Gee (16671730) was a prominent London merchant trading in silk, iron and other commodities, and an adviser to the Board of Trade and Plantations. A Quaker and close associate of William Penn, he was one of the original mortgagees of Pennsylvania. In 1715, Gee and Augustine Washington (George Washington's father) founded the Principio Company. It was backed by an association of British ironmasters, merchants and capitalists. Principio produced pig-iron and bar-iron in the provinces of Maryland and Virginia for sale in England. By 1723, Gee and his partners owned or controlled more than 12,000 acres [approximately 4,850 hectares] of land in North America containing iron ore deposits. "A compilation from various journals to impress the public with the great importance of the regions described, and to make them jealous of its occupation by the French. The whole of the territory was claimed by Dr. Coxe, the father of the author, as proprietor under the Crown. The author explored the great part of it, and lived there fourteen years" (Sabin 17279). Coxe's father "served as royal physician at the courts of King Charles II and Queen Anne.
