Written at a time of declining exports, decaying agriculture and high unemployment Trade and navigation discusses foreign trade with strong protectionist tendencies. Gee is keen to improve trade with the North American colonies, particularly in commodities which England imports from other countries. There are brief chapters on trade with Carolina, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and New York, and New England, as well as the tobacco and sugar plantations of the West Indies. He also highlights the potential political dangers of relying too heavily on Muscovy and Sweden for such essential naval stores as hemp, flax, pitch and tar.Gee (1667-1730) was a wealthy London merchant in silk, iron, and other commodities, and an adviser to the Board of Trade and Plantations. He was a Quaker, a friend of William Penn, and one of the original mortgagees of Pennsylvania. In 1720 he became a founding partner of the Principio Company, a joint-stock company producing iron in Maryland for use in British industry.A popular and influential work, nine English editions were produced in the eighteenth century, four in French, one in Spanish, and one in German (Kenneth E. With a folding engraved map of "the Carolana and the River Meschacebe", with an inset of the Meschacebe, wood-engraved head- and tail-pieces and initials. Bound in modern full brown morocco gilt extra by Wood of London. On the spine, five raised bands. Title gilt to second panel, and author and date to the third. Gilt edges. Extremities and hinges lightly worn. Pages washed. Wide margins. The first British exploration of the Mississippi Valley and the first English account of Louisiana. "A compilation from various journals to impress the public with the great importance of the regions described, and to make them jealous of its occupation by the French. Under the name of Carolana was comprehended the present State of Georgia, the Floridas, Alabama, Mississippi, and Louisiana. The whole of the territory was claimed by Dr. Coxe, the father of the author, as proprietor under the Crown. The author explored the great part of it, and lived there fourteen years" (Sabin 17279). Coxe's father "served as royal physician at the courts of King Charles II and Queen Anne. Dr. Coxe also ranked as the largest shareholder in the West Jersey proprietorship by 1687, and he acted as that colony's absentee governor from then until he sold his proprietary interest in 1692" (Thomas L. Later edition of Gee's most famous work, advocating for a protectionist trade policy and reduction in the national debt. It "presented its overview of British trade both historically and by national areas, and commented on specific problems of trade (for example devoting chapter 12 to 'French fashions pernicious to England)'. However, the greater part of the work was concerned with suggesting remedies: in particular solving the colonial labour problem by transporting domestic convicts and the unemployed poor and the creation of free ports at Gibraltar and Port Mahon; and, more generally, the encouragement of foreign import-replacing production in the plantations" (ODNB).
