Rare second edition of an unusual grammar book for the Hindustani language, which was spoken in what is now known as Pakistan, Bangladesh, and parts of Nepal, Bhutan, and Iran. It was specifically intended for Portuguese missionaries who were working in the declining Mughal Empire (1526-1858). This small book, which has clearly been used, offers an interesting insight into the work of these missionaries. While it focusses mostly on the basics of the language, like numbers, colours and common verbs, there is also a section for religious words, like the virtues, the names of Christian figures and important biblical terms. The spine is damaged with the front board nearly detached (two of three sewing supports are stil intact). The edges and corners of the boards show slight signs of wear. Somewhat foxed throughout. Otherwise in good condition.l Innocencio 3, p. 161; Porbase 505006 (4 copies BnP); WorldCat 39689413 (3 copies). Mid-19th-century quarter gold-tooled tanned sheepskin, marbled paper sides. With the title in gold on the spine, marbled endpapers. With a woodcut vignette on the title page. Pages: [2], 150 [2] pp.

The "Gramática indostana" of 1778 and the portuguese jesuit mission at Agra and Delhi : 1719-1748». Vide igualmente a comunicação de Otto Zwartjes, da Universidade de Amesterdão, com o título: «Portuguese Missionary Grammars in Asia, Africa and Brazil, 1550?1800». Hindustan Grammar Dim.: In 8º (20.5x13.5 cm) with 136, [iv] pp. Binding: recent half calf with gilt tools on spine and boards coated with marbles decorative paper. Untrimmed, except on top edge. Ink stamp (monogram) on title page. A very fine print by Propaganda Fide, decorated with a fleuron at the centre of the title page, a head vignette depicting an angel surrounded by branches on page 3, and a tail fleuron on page 135. The final pages contain the licences: «Decretum Sacrae Congragationis Generalis de Propaganda Fide. Habitae die 26. Ianuari 1778. [.] Ioseph M. Card[inali] Castelli Praefectus. Stefanus Borgia Secret.» First Rome edition (the second edition was published in 1805 in Lisbon). There are just two copies in Portugal, one in the BNP-Portugal?s National Library (truncated, no covers, nor spine) and another at the UCP-Oporto?s Catholic University (no description). This work was published to be used by the missionaries sent to the Mongol Court in the north of India. An essential work for a linguistic contact with the grammar and vocabulary of the Hindustan language that historically includes what are, nowadays, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, and Bhutan. It is written in Portuguese, which was at the time the only Western language recognised at the time in the East for the missions and trade, hence this work, printed in Rome, having no comments about this way of approaching the Indian language. It includes, from page 55 through 136, bilingual lists Portuguese-Hindustani of numerals, verbs, nouns and adjectives, as well as the name of the kings, with the Hindustan words transliterated to characters of the western alphabet.
