Rebound in fair calfskin and decorated in the " Cambridge Style " of the 17th century i.e. sprinkled boards, double panels with a…flower tool at the four outer corners and with a gold two line frame bordering both boards. Slightest marks to spine and boards otherwise a fine binding. Deckled edges to pages. Internally generally very good. Slight creasing to most pages.Some gatherings are tanned and there are slight marks. Some staining to the rear end papers of volume 2 only affecting two printed page, all text still readable. The first edition of this work in a full calf binding. This is the first volume of a two volume set, containing the major wor…k of Daniel Whitby (16381726), who was a controversial English theologian and biblical commentator. This first volume contains a paraphrase with commentary on the Four Gospels and the Acts of the Holy Apostles, with an index and table of phrases and matters contained in the commentary, and a chronological index to the New Testament. In this commentary, Whitby opposes John Tillotson's view of hell torments. Illustrated with a folding map of several countries, cities, towns and other places mentioned in the New Testament. First editions of this work are very scarce. In a full calf binding. Externally sound, with several losses to the leather to the spine and boards, the largest loss being to the rear joint. Shelf wear to the extremities. Splitting to the joints but held firmly by the cords. Internally, firmly bound. Pages are bright and clean. Old woodworm damage to the lower perimeter of the pages to the chronological index. Good. Not Stated (illustrator). book.

II, bookplate to front free endpaper verso of both vols, binder's ink stamp to verso of front marbled free endpapers, slightly toned with occasional moderate spotting; finely bound in the first-half of the 19th-century in dark blue morocco by Hering… of 9 Newman St., London, covers tooled in gilt with an all-over design of acorns and fleurons around a central lozenge enclosing the arms of Rufford Abbey, gilt lattice spines, all edges gilt, minor wear to extremities and joints; [16], xlviii, 720, [12]; [8], xl, 742, [50]pp. An excellent example of Whitby's Paraphrase and Commentary on the New Testament finely bound in dark blue morocco by Hering of 9 Newman Street, London. The bindery was established on St. Martin's Street in London by the German immigrant Charles Hering Sr. in 1794, soon acquiring a reputation among the leading bibliophiles of the period as the artistic successor to Roger Payne. Following Hering Sr.'s death in 1812 the bindery moved to 9 Newman Street where it continued in operation until 1845. The firm's reputation for fine craftsmanship was sufficient to carry it over the loss of its founder,growing in time to account the Prince Regent amongst its patrons.
