In den WarenkorbFirst edition of this pioneering defence of ethical vegetarianism, "the first English work in which animals were said to have rights" (Perkins, p. 41). A Gloucestershire-born former shepherd and London merchant, Tryon (1634-1703) developed his religious and dietary philosophy under the influence of Jakob Böhme, having earlier been an Anabaptist. Combining mystical philosophy with practical dietary advice, the work advocates vegetarianism, temperance, and avoidance of tobacco. Tryon asserts that by killing animals, humans become more violent. It connects animal rights with English liberty, linking the rights of animals to those of people against the arbitrary power of the sovereign. The work went through several editions and inspired a celebratory poem by Aphra Behn; Tryon's writings encouraged Benjamin Franklin's youthful adoption of vegetarianism. Bitting, pp. 466-7; Cagle 1029; ESTC R10677. David Perkins, Romanticism and Animal Rights, 2003. Octavo (178 x 118 mm), pp. [16], 669, [3]. Contemporary panelled calf, blind floral cornerpieces. Nineteenth-century ownership signature of Thomas D. Wood to front free endpapers; pencilled signature of Chris Dyke dated 1821 to p. 434 and rear free endpaper; occasional early ink underlining and sidelining and a couple of annotations. Calf abraded, paperclip rust mark to first few leaves, a couple of headlines trimmed, small chip to leaf 4M2 with loss of a few letters, light worming at foot not affecting text: a very good copy.…
