Herman Taube, a novelist, poet and longtime Washington correspondent for the Forverts, After the war Taube married Susan Struass, a Holocaust survivor who had survived the Riga ghetto and Kaiserwald concentration camp. Taube began writing for the Forverts almost as soon as he arrived. He continued to serve as the newspaper s Washington and Baltimore correspondent for nearly 60 years, covering everything from the White House to the founding of the United States Holocaust Memorial Museum. In addition to journalism, Taube wrote more than 20 books of fiction and poetry. His work often depicted his wartime experiences and life as an immigrant to the United States. Inscribed by the author on the half-title page. The inscription reads "For Carol Banks With all good wishes Herman Taube 10/11/11". Herman Taube was born in Lodz, Poland in 1918. Herman began nursing in 1937. Herman was called for duty as a medic in the Polish Army in August 1939. Germany invaded Poland on September 1, 1939, thus marking the start of WWII. The Polish army was defeated within weeks of the Blitzkrieg. The Soviet Union occupied eastern Poland according to the German-Soviet Pact on September 17, 1939. Herman was captured by the Soviet forces. Lower ranking soldiers were sent to Siberia, a harsh area of the Soviet Union where Soviet work camps were located. Based on an agreement between the Soviet government and the Polish government in exile, all Polish citizens held in Soviet camps were to be released. Upon his release, Herman went to Uzbekistan to join the Second Polish Army. He worked as a medic in Uzbekistan. In June 1944 Herman was injured. After recuperating Herman was sent to the headquarters of the Second Polish Army, stationed in Lublin, the former Lublin/Majdanek concentration camp. Herman worked in the Majdanek hospital, caring for the liberated prisoners. Shortly thereafter Herman was sent to work in a hospital in Pomerania where he worked until the end of the war. After the war Herman married Susan Strauss, a fellow survivor. The two immigrated to the United States in 1947. Herman is the author of more than twenty novels and books of poetry and has worked as a writer and journalist for over 60 years. The work of poet and novelist Herman Taube reveals the inner world of a tormented yet loving soul, a world of deep richness and passion. Looking Back, Going Forward includes recent English translations of poems Taube originally wrote in Polish and Yiddish about his World War II experiences in Poland, Siberia, Uzbekistan, Russia, and Pomerania. It also includes poems dealing with emigration to the United States in 1947, his continuing work as a journalist, and a life that has been dedicated to service in Jewish communities and his expanding family.
