Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - This book challenges the conventional wisdom that civil war inevitably stymies economic development and that 'civil war represents development in reverse'. While some civil wars may have adverse economic effects, Civil War and Uncivil Development posits that not all conflicts have negative economic consequences and, under certain conditions, civil war violence can bolster processes of economic development. Using Colombia as a case study, this book provides evidence that violence perpetrated by key actors of the conflict - the public armed forces and paramilitaries - has facilitated economic growth and processes of economic globalisation in Colombia (namely, international trade and foreign direct investment), with profoundly negative consequences for large swathes of civilians. The analysis also discusses the 'development in reverse' logic in the context of other conflicts across the globe. This book will be an invaluable resource for scholars, practitioners and students in the fields of security and development, civil war studies, peace studies, the political economy of conflict and international relations.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Seminar paper from the year 2013 in the subject Politics - Topic: Globalization, Political Economics, grade: A, National Institute of Development Administration (Graduate School of Public Administration), course: Development Administration and Globalisation, language: English, abstract: In this paper, there is an attempt to assess factors that pose as impediments to the creation of an effective regional block to maximize some of the benefits embedded in integrating regional economies to foster development in West Africa. For the past four decades, West Africa has been experimenting regional economic integration but progress has been slow and without significant results. Thus, there is a need for a more favorable environment for overall trade. The potential of ECOWAS in exploiting economies of scale and enhancing competition has been limited by a number of impediments such as trans-border movement, lack of monetary union, political divide especially with francophone countries still holding allegiance to France under the system of assimilation, protection of market by bigger States (protectionism), lack of institutional framework to champion the cause of economic integration and instability posing as security threat among other factors. Analysts have suggested adopting and replicating the EU model holds the key to overcome these impediments. A critical assessment of the EU model is made to ascertain which aspects of the EU model are adoptable and implementable for ECOWAS to be fully operational to bring about desired economic progress and development. However, the current EU crisis has given analysts a lot to think about and any other regional body (like ASEAN) that desires to pursue full integration. Currently, there are signs to show that some members want to secede from the union either voluntarily or by coercion. On the basis of this development, we outline certain measures as recommendations for ECOWAS.

Taschenbuch. Zustand: Neu. Druck auf Anfrage Neuware - Printed after ordering - Essay from the year 2015 in the subject Business economics - General, grade: 2:1, De Montfort University Leicester, course: International Business and Globalisation, language: English, abstract: In regards to Latin America globalisation has a number of reasons to affect the development of the economic, social and political aspect of the landscape. Key economic effects that need to be expanded on includes the impact of trade in terms of Gross Domestic Product and the Balance of Payments through imports and exports and also the potential benefit of investment opportunities in South America through globalisation. Social impacts that need to be expanded upon include poverty and crime and the politics behind working conditions and regulations. Politically, governments have been able to communicate more effectively allowing for support between nations, trade pacts and negotiations, while also discussing the neo-liberalist push for Latin America to adopt the Washington Consensus. These key areas need to be discussed more closely, in particularly the negative effects that these can cause and in terms of South America, the exploitation that has been quite common since the growth of globalisation.Economically, globalisation has had a major impact on Latin America for better and for worse. The spread of neoliberalism in the 1990s has allowed the influx of transnational corporations (TNCs) in Latin America. This US led programme pushed for privatisation of industries and the growth of enterprise and free-market values allowing for TNCs to take advantage of low national wages and new markets in areas such as Latin America. 16 pp. Englisch.
