Uniformly bound in the publisher's original cloth. Externally, smart with slight bumping and rubbing and more significant loss to title pieces. Archival markings to each spine, and one or two additional marks, including some light staining to the rear board of Volume IV. Internally, firmly bound. Wallis desarrolló tempranamente un gusto por la literatura y colaboró en publicaciones periódicas con numerosos artículos de crítica literaria e histórica, y también con versos o…casionales. Se convirtió en un experto en literatura e historia españolas y fue elegido miembro correspondiente de la Real Academia de Historia de Madrid en 1843. Es posible que haya sido un conocido del poeta y autor en ciernes Edgar Allan Poe , junto con su amigo, el autor y figura política John Pendleton Kennedy. En 1847 visitó España y en 1849 el gobierno de los Estados Unidos lo envió en una misión especial a ese país para examinar el título de las tierras públicas en su antigua colonia de Florida Oriental (en la península), afectadas por las concesiones de la Corona real española durante las negociaciones para el tratado de 1819, que preveía la anexión estadounidense de Florida y la creación del Territorio de Florida.
