The second epoch, 800-1017 witnessed the invasion of the Danes who for a time seemed likely to conquer England until Alfred pushed them back and by treaty with Guthrum kept them to the north and east of a line from London to Bedford and the north. In the tenth century England was organized under Alfred`s successors. But the Danes came and in 1017 Cnut became King of England. In the epoch 1017-1066 rule was divided between Danes and the dynasty of Wessex. Liebermann, who was awarded a doctorate honoris causa in Munich, Oxford and Cambridge, received the commission for his main work from the Munich Academy of the Sciences in the name of the Savigny Foundation.
