First edition: there is also an 11-page version, of which just one copy is recorded (at t he Library of Congress), which is almost certainly a reprint. The Huguenot financier Theodor Janssen (c. 1658-1748) was born in France but settled in London in 1683, already possessed of a substantial fortune. He quickly made his mark in the city, and had commercial interests in France, Italy and Amsterdam; in 1695 was a founder member of the Bank of England. He was made a baronet in 1715 and became an MP in 1717, but his fortunes suffered when he was drawn into the speculation which followed fraudulent dealings in South Sea Company shares in the early 1720s. In 1721 he was expelled from the House of Commons, and late disqualified for life from public office. Janssen left no papers and his personality seems hard to read, but he was a cultured man and a book collector. As his biographer comments in ODNB: 'The range of his commercial interests cannot be documented but is partly reflected in the books he owned, and in particular the tract he wrote in 1713'. The General Maxims deal quite specifically with a number of commodities traded between Britain and France.
