Bound in chestnut morocco by the Lakeside Bindery ("The Lakeside Press/ Chicago" gilt to the front lower turn-in) with a double gilt fillet border. On the spine, five raised bands. Author and title ("Evans/ Map/ of the/ Middle/ Colo-/nies") gilt to the second panel. Imprint gilt to the tail. Gilt inside dentelle. The faintest rubbing to the extremities. Damp to the upper edge of the text-block (not affecting the text, causing a tear (repaired) to the title-leaf). Sporadic foxing. Repaired chips to the fore-edge of a handful of leaves, with some rounding to the lower fore-corner of quires B-D. A remarkably large example. Pigment oxidation and some offsetting to the map. Lewis Evans (ca. 1700-1756) was a Welsh geographer, who emigrated to North America in the 1730's, spending a considerable portion of his life working in Philadelphia and traveling throughout the Middle Colonies (viz. New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware). He had trained as a surveyor and became friends with Benjamin Franklin in 1736 after buying a book from him; it was Franklin who encouraged him to pursue his scientific and geographic interests and explore the East coast. Accompanied by Conrad Weiser, who had extensive connections with Native Americans in the region, and the botanist John Bartram, Evans collected material for a detailed map of New York, New Jersey and Delaware, which, later modified to include Pennsylvania, was published in 1749 as A Map of Pensilvania, New Jersey, New-York, and the Three Delaware Counties. Evans's best-known map, however, is A General Map of the Middle British Colonies in America, which spanned from the Falls of the Ohio to Narragansett Bay and from Virginia to Montreal. Though issued before the publication of the present item, it is often, as here, included with it. Evans in his analysis points out the advantages to the English colonies of the Ohio territory and vehemently urges a general study of that region and the ways by which it could be reached so that the French might be more easily driven out. He divides the eastern United States geomorphically for the first time, delineating the New England Upland, the Coastal Plain, the Fall Line, the Piedmont, the Blue Ridge, the Folded Appalachians, the Allegheny Front, and the Allegheny Plateau. Its importance in the colonial period is rivaled only by Mitchell's; Schwartz and Ehrenberg anoint it "one of the most improtant maps published in America before Independence." The book, published by Benjamin Franklin and David Hall, is one of the white whales of colonial Americana, and the map -- especially in its first state, without the addition of "The Lakes Cataraqui" above Lake Ontario -- even more desirable. The two together are perhaps the ultimate Americanum. Dr. Frank T. Siebert (1912-1997) was one of the greatest twentieth-century book-collectors, especially in the field of Americana and more particularly Native American material (his sale at Sotheby's New York, 21 May 1999, in which the present volume was lot 267, was "The Frank T. Siebert Library of the North American Indian and the American Frontier"). He collected works of the utmost rarity, finest condition and greatest importance. From the collection of Frank Sherwin Streeter (1918-2006), purchased at his sale ("Important navigation, Pacific voyages, cartography, science") at Christie's New York 16 April 2007, lot 185 ($168,000). Streeter was the son of the legendary Americana collector Thomas Streeter, whose sale catalogue has become a reference work in its own right. Some of his collection he inherited from his father (those he did not he would often buy back), but other volumes he added over many decades until his death. The map has been beautifully colored by a contemprary hand, as evidenced by the oxidation of the green pigment (verdegris) on the verso. In both the map and the explanatory text (each of which were sold separately), Evans emphasizes the importance of the Ohio Valley in Great Britain's battle with the French for dominance in North America. JUST TWO COPIES OF THE FIRST STATE OF THE MAP HAVE BEEN SOLD AT AUCTION SINCE 1978, AND ONLY ONE OF WHICH WAS ACCOMPANIED BY THE FIRST PRINTING OF THE TEXT. Evan's map was MASTERPIECE OF CARTOGRAPHIC SYNTHESIS, AND ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT MAPS PUBLISHED IN AMERICA BEFORE INDEPENDENCE (Schwartz and Ehrenberg). He incorporated information from his own observation with that from the best available sources. His intense study of sources was distilled into this ambitious performance which builds upon the work which had resulted in his Map of Pennsylvania, New-Jersey, New-York, and the three Delaware Counties of 1754. For Virginia, Evans consulted an early state of Fry and Jefferson's Map of the most inhabited part of Virginia and William Mayo's Map of the Northern Neck of Virginia. From the Fry and Jefferson maps, Evans adjusted the longitudinal position of the Potomac River and added the area claimed by the Ohio Company to Pennsylvania. He also consulted Walter Hoxton's Mapp of the Bay Chesepeake Bay. His sources for Connecticut were the maps of William Douglas and Thomas Pownall (to whom Evans dedicates the map in the upper left panel). The map was eagerly anticipated by colonists who had heard rumors that Evans had amassed new information on the Ohio Valley, not available in John Mithchell's map of the same year. Mitchell was Evan's major competitor, and his A Map of British and French Dominions had appeared five months before teh Evans map. The differences in their border delineations exposed both to critical scrutiny, and Evans had the advantage due to the greater accuracy of his data. Mitchell's map was also more of a general map, and from the start Evans had set his emphasis on the Ohio Valley, the region that was the source of friction between England and France. The borders in the Evans map were based on much better information. However Mitchell had the benefit of official sanction: the Board of Trade and Plantations had sponsored his map. Evans was working without such support, and thus the official response to Evans' map was cautious. Nonetheless, the great detail and research which informed the Evans map assured its place as one of the most significant maps of the age, and those living in the Colonies recognized its accuracy. "The map evidently excited considerable interest in the Colonies, and according to what Governor Pownall says in 1776, it was for a long time generally accepted as the standard authority for settling voundair3es, purchases, etc. on account of the extreme care and accuracy with which it had been prepared" (Henry N. Single sheet (20 ½ x 27 inches) This map is considered one of the most important maps of the British colonies done prior to Independence. Lewis Evans' map shows the East coast of North America from Montreal and New England to the Northern border of North Carolina. It also includes the Ohio Valley in the West. It shows areas of New Jersey, Pennsylvania, New York, Rhode Island, Maryland, Virginia, Delaware, and Connecticut. The map also includes a sketch of the upper parts of Canada on the upper left hand side. Evans' map of the Middle British Colonies appeared in 1755, the same year in which John Mitchell published his famous "Mitchell Map". Evans drew from his own original surveys, however he also used surveys attributed to Fry and Jefferson's map of Virginia (1753). Evans' map acknowledges French claims to all lands northwest of St. Lawrence Fort, resulting in criticism from New York. Despite the controversy, Evans's work was influential (there were eighteen editions and piracies issued between 1755 and 1814), and was famously used by General Braddock during the French and Indian War. "By 1758 Kitchin's plate seems to have passed into the possession of Thomas Jefferys, the famous map publisher of Charing Cross, for in that year we find the map re-issued with exactly the same title as Kitchin's but with an alteration in the imprint . Very little difference is to be observed between the issues of 1756 and 1758, but a number of new Forts on the back settlements are added in the latter . Fort du Quesne, which was marked simply F. du Quesne' in the 1756 plate, is now lettered 'Ft. du Quesne Destroy'd 1758 now called Pittsburg'" (Stevens). This correction to this issue makes this map the earliest map to name Pittsburgh. A rare issue of a desirable map of colonial America. Lewis Evans was a Welsh surveyor and geographer, working predominantly in British America. He travelled to the British Colonies in the mid-18th century; where he began his work for his later published maps.
