This edition, printed on strathmore deckle edge paper, was numbered and hand-signed by the author, Harry Worcester Smith, and was issued in a limited edition of two hundred copies for America. This copy is Number 87. A Photogravure of the Porter's Lodge of Knockdrin Castle appears on the Frontispiece. There are 43 half-tone illustrations in the book, as well as a black and white map of Ireland, showing the Twenty-five fox Hunting Counties of Ireland. Harry Worcester Smith was a successful businessman in the textile industry. Smith started the Grafton Country Club with the desire to bring wholesome English outdoor life, riding, shooting and hunting to America. He was a champion four-inhand driver. His horses "Sky-High" and "Sue Woodstock" won three National Horse Shows at Madison Square Garden. He took up steeplechasing in his thirties and placed first at the Grand National Steeplechase at Sheepshead bay in 1901, as well as in the Hempstead and Calvert Cups in Baltimore the same year. A pivotal moment in his foxhunting career is known as The Great Hound Match of 1905 in which English foxhounds and American foxhounds were put to the test to see which breed was superior. Smith and his American foxhounds proved to be the victor by the final judgment at the end of the two week match. Smith wrote numerous essays and authored several books, including A Sporting Tour through Ireland, England, Wales and France. This book tells of the author's trip to Ireland for the hunting season, 1912-1913, with horses and hounds bred in the United States. The author found that no more sporting race exists than the Irish, and that any sports-man going to hunt in Ireland who can ride straight is soon welcome everywhere. Early edition of this highly important work on America with some of the earliest maps of the States and territories. Jedidiah Morse (1761-1826) produced this as the first geography textbook deliberately oriented towards the forming United States. The first edition came out in 1789, the year George Washington was first elected President, and was completed when a second volume was released in 1793. It would go on to be released almost yearly, and earn Morse the nickname of 'father of American geography.' In this edition the two large folding maps of the Southern and Northern States are present, showing the United States before western expansion, and includes the known territories of many of the Native American tribes such as the Chocktaw, Muscogee, Cherokee, Chickasaw, Seminole, Iroquois, Algonquin, and Huron. Second edition of a detailed and thoroughly illustrated account of microscopes and their use by the famous London optician George Adams (1750-1795), mathematical instrument maker to King George III, first published in 1787, but here with both the text and illustrations greatly expanded. Adams earned a worldwide reputation as a maker of spectacles and microscope lenses and wrote many scientific publications that give regular and systematic instruction in the most important branches of natural science with all its modern improvements, including the present one devoted to microscopes. With an owner's inscription of the Edinburgh Royal Society on the title-page of the text volume and an inscription, perhaps by the Glasgow professor of medicine, eye surgeon and fellow of the Royal Society Thomas Wharton Jones (1808-1891) on the first contemporary endpaper of the plates volume: "For the Royal Society Edinburgh from their . humble servant / Mr Jones". Bindings only very slightly worn. Frontispiece and title-page slightly foxed, also some foxing throughout the text volume.
