Il volume è opera del noto critico letterario, scrittore e aforista francese Charles Augustin de Sainte-Beuve (Boulogne-sur-Mer, 23 dicembre 1804 Parigi, 13 ottobre 1869). Grande amico di Victor Hugo, fu membro dell Académie française. Nel 1849 fu chiamato a collaborare con il celebre giornale Constitutionnel, su invito del direttore di questo, Louis Vèron. Gli fu chiesto di preparare per ogni lunedì un articolo di argomento letterario o storico, dietro il compenso di cento franchi, che nel corso del tempo, con l aumentare della suo successo arrivarono ad essere centoventicinque, per ogni scritto. Questa fu l'occupazione che diede più successo a Sainte-Beuve, che dedicò gran parte della sua vita alla stesura di questi lundis, inglobati in seguito sotto il titolo di Causeries du lundi. Proprio da questi scritti arrivano queste biografie di alcune delle più celebri figure femminili della storia.
