In den WarenkorbHaunting piece of Company-rule ephemera announcing the funeral of William Townsend Jones (c.1757-1807), attorney on the council of the Supreme Court of Judicature at Fort William, the highest court of British India from its foundation in 1774 until 1862. Jones's name is now usually connected with his indictment in December 1789…for flogging to death one Sheriut Allah, the brother of his durwan (gate-porter), whom he suspected of stealing one of his dogs, which was "an unlikely crime for a Muslim" (Franklin). He was acquitted by the Supreme Court, who concluded that Sheriut Allah had died by suicide by eating opium. The affair arose only two years after the impeachment of Warren Hastings in 1787, whose fall from grace had begun with a similar miscarriage of justice involving the execution of a native East India Company administrator, Nandakumar. Jones is also a recurring character in the recently published diaries of Calcutta surveyor and builder, Richard Blechynden (1759-1822), which reveal that he was also rumoured to have killed another of his servants, his mater (sweeper). The undertaker, Peter Lindeman (1771-1856), of Scottish descent, worked from premises at 144 Durrumtollah; from 1803 the Calcutta Missionaries held services in his house on Cossitollah Street until the completion of a new chapel at Lall Bazar in 1809, of which he became a trustee. Franklin, "Orientalist Jones": Sir William Jones, Poet, Lawyer, and Linguist, 1746-1794, pp. 300-1; Robb, "Memory, Place and British Memoirals in Early Calcutta", in Rashkow et al., eds, Memory, Identity, and the Colonial Encounter in India, online, accessed 4/11/2017; see further Robb, ed., Sex and Sensibility: Richard Blechynden's Calcutta Diaries, 1791-1822, online. Single sheet of laid paper (130 x 139 mm), printed on one side. Mourning border, motif of urn on an altar. Contemporary signature "T. R. R[]" on verso, shaved; the leaf sometime removed from an album or mount (adhesive markings and 3 strips of adhesive paper verso), 3 faint creases from folding, minute hole to one intersection of folds. In excellent condition.

In den WarenkorbFolio. (12 x 9 inches). 16 pages, as issued (a bit spotted, one or two fore-edges frayed). Sir William Drummond Stewart's 1843 expedition to the Rocky Mountains was recorded by Matthew Field, a writer on the staff of the New Orleans Picayune, who accompanied the party. References to the expedition were also made in the Niles Reg…ister of 1843 in several numbers, including the present where reference is made to his attending a Naval funeral upon his party's return to Washington, D.C. Stewart was "the scion of a noble Scottish family who became a Mountain Man of the American West. As a youthful officer of British cavalry, Stewart campaigned under Wellington and won battle honors at Waterloo. Coming to America in search of excitement and adventure, he made many journeys into the then largely unknown wilderness beyond the Missouri River. "Already a crack shot, Captain Stewart quickly became a fine frontiersman, learning the skills by which men survived in the wild, although he insisted on traveling in style, with luxurious accoutrements and a store of fancy foodstuffs. But he respected Americans and admired frontier democracy, and soon became the trusted friend of fur traders and Indian chiefs alike. "Stewart was in America for eight vigorous, vital years, making annual treks to the great rendezvous, where trappers and redskins met for weeks of trading and orgiastic frolicking. On his 1837 trip he took along Alfred Jacob Miller, a young American artist who made hundreds of watercolour sketches that became invaluable source material, a pictorial record of a colorful way of life that even then was beginning to vanish" (Mae Porter and Odessa Davenport "Scotsman in Buckskin", publisher's blurb). See Wagner-Camp-Becker 104 (New Orleans Picayune printing).
