Due to harsh criticism both at home and abroad of the American involvement in Vietnam, the film industry struggled to produce notable Vietnam War films during the conflict. Only in the late 1970s Hollywood came up with significant films that were trying to come to terms with the past. Down to the present day, the film industry has produced a number of Vietnam War films. What is special about these films is that they show a high level of diversity. In this seminar paper I will examine how the Vietnam War is portrayed in Full Metal Jacket and outline its context in relation with other filmic presentations of the Vietnam War. In particular, I will focus on the drafting and military drill of young men, as well as on the effects that the drill and the war itself had on recruits. I will first introduce the historical event the film is dealing with and outline its filmic presentations and film-historical context. Then I will briefly introduce the film and provide information regarding its historical context. The central question of this paper is, which specific perspective is illustrated in Full Metal Jacket and to what extent the film can be classified along other Vietnam War films. In resuming thoughts I will first establish what stance Full Metal Jacket takes towards the Vietnam War and how this perspective is created. Viele sind gescheitert, etwa am eigenen Anspruch oder an gestelzter Politisierung. Keiner schildert filmisch diesen Krieg wie Kubrick es tat. 'Full Metal Jacket' heißt das kontrovers diskutierte Ergebnis seiner zweitletzten Regiearbeit von 1987. Mit seiner typisch pedantisch perfektionistischen Art gelingt Kubrick ein ohne Frage beeindruckendes Werk. Warum besitzt dieser Film Kultstatus sogar unter Kritikern Welche Merkmale heben ihn von der Masse ab und machen ihn zum Vorreiter In dieser Arbeit möchte ich mich mit den Eigenwilligkeiten von 'Full Metal Jacket' auseinandersetzen. Zuerst werde ich den Film im Detail vorstellen. Hierbei gehe ich insbesondere auch auf die Romanvorlage von Gustav Hasford ein. Anschließend folgt im Hauptteil ein Überblick des Kriegsfilmgenres sowie die Abgrenzung zu Kubricks 'Paths Of Glory' und dem bekannten 'Platoon' von Oliver Stone, der als genretypischer Film gilt. Genaues Augenmerk wird gegen Ende der Arbeit auf die Dualität oder besser formuliert die Dualitäten in 'Full Metal Jacket' gelegt. In diesem Zusammenhang befasse ich mich auch näher mit der zwielichtigen Persönlichkeit von Private Joker, der wichtigsten Figur. Joker erwähnt im Mittelteil der Handlung die Arbeit des Psychologen C.G. Jung, inklusive seines Dualitätsbegriffs. Der Ansatz wird kurz porträtiert und dann auf den Film bezogen. In einem kurzen Fazit werden schließlich die Erkenntnisse gesammelt, ausgewertet und gegenübergestellt. Stanley Kubrick hat Novitäten eingeführt, 'Stilbrüche' verteidigt und den Einfluss des Geldes ignoriert. Vor allem entstanden aus seiner Hand außergewöhnliche Geschichten. Sein zweitletzter Film 'Full Metal Jacket' gehört mit Sicherheit dazu. Wenn Gustav Hasford in der Lage war, das Buch zu schreiben, dann war Stanley Kubrick auch in der Lage, einen Film darüber zu drehen. Zweifelt jemand daran.…
