Heiden "was Adolf Hitler's first serious biographer. Heiden shaped the whole biographical approach to the subject, from Hitler's early life in Austria to the p…olitical triumph of 1933 and the establishment of a harsh dictatorship. Moreover, he did so as a witness to the events he was describing. Unlike more recent accounts, Der Fuehrer was written by someone who watched Hitler's meteoric rise and felt moved to explain to contemporaries how it was possible" (Overy, p. 5). The work was first published in German in Zurich in two volumes in 1936 and 1937, the first covering his rise, the second his time in power. This first volume was first published in English in London by Constable in March 1936. It includes a new preface by the author. The second volume was published in English in 1939.
