Softcover. Zustand: Near Fine. Uncorrected galleys. String-tied in unprinted gray wrappers with applied paper title label. Printed rectos only. Slight crease on the front wrap, modest age-toning, else near fine, with the title handwritten on the spine as "Franny and Zooy" [sic]. Laid in are a press release, a publicity statement to booksellers, and a seasonal pamphlet reviewing the book. The press release, on Little, Brown stationery, is interesting as it details an August publication date (the book was eventually published in September) and also announces that the book would contain an introduction by Salinger (the little additional text that he reluctantly provided was used on the jacket flaps and there is no introduction within the book itself). Additionally, these galleys lack the dedication page added to the published book. By the late 1950s Salinger had become so disillusioned with the marketing practices of publishers that he broke all ties with his English publisher after they allowed *Nine Stories* to be published with a garish cover. With Little, Brown he stipulated that there would be no advance publicity for the book, that it would have simple and understated art design, and that Salinger himself would provide the jacket text. Rare.

- Jerome David Salinger (* 1. Januar 1919 in New York; 27. . Werk: Sein bekanntestes Werk Der Fänger im Roggen (The Catcher in the Rye, 1951) verhalf Salinger zu Weltruhm. . Aus: wikipedia-J._D._Salinger. Original dustwrapper designs produced for the 1961 first edition of Franny and Zooey, annotated by J. D. Salinger. Two dustwrapper designs on gloss white card. The first is a trial design in blue, orange and black, folded as a dustwrapper with blank flaps. This design was evidently under early consideration by the author and is referred to in a letter to his editor Ned [Bradford] dated May, 10 1961 "That's a very nice blue. I feel, too, that the red-line border is better, livelier than the black" [a photocopy of the letter is included]. The second artwork is what would become the actual design used for the first edition and is annotated by J. D. Salinger in pencil "This is the one I like, but with the diagonal stripe removed [with an arrow to the subsequently removed (clipped) stripe]. Many thanks!". Together with a fine copy, in fine dustwrapper, of the first edition, first printing. All housed within in a bespoke navy blue quarter morocco solander case. A remarkable and unique artifact from the publishing history and hand of one of the most reclusive authors in twentieth century literature. J. Randall Williams, who managed the New York office of Little Brown, was one of the very few people permitted to maintain some contact with the author - by telephone and mail only - to deal with the physical details of bringing out the books. "A very particular man" was Salinger, exceptionally fussy about type faces and the quality of paper and design. For the green and white jacket of Franny and Zooey, published in 1961, Williams thinks he sent out 27 samples of white before the precise shade was found to suit Salinger. (Dudar, Helen: J. D. Salinger in Retreat; Writers Bloc, June 1979) Further details and images for any of the items listed are available on request. Lucius Books welcomes direct contact with our customers.

Erstausgabe
Cloth. Zustand: Fine. None (illustrator). First edition. A lovely set of two first UK editions of works by American author J.D. Salinger, author of 'The Catcher in the Rye'. Present here are the first UK editions of 'Franny and Zooey', 1962, and 'Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters and Seymour: An Introduction', 1963.In the publisher's original price unclipped dust wrappers. The first work is composed of the short story 'Franny', and novella 'Zooey'. They had initially both appeared in the New Yorker magazine in 1955 and 1957 respectively. This work focuses on the two youngest siblings of the Glass family, a family who made frequent appearances throughout Salinger's writing. 'Franny' tells the story of an undergraduate visiting her boyfriend in an unnamed college town. 'Zooey' is set shortly afterwards, with the titular character, a young actress, experiencing an existential breakdown in her parents Manhattan apartment, and receiving comfort from her younger sister Franny. The two novellas in the second work also feature the Glass family, with 'Raise High the Roof Beam, Carpenters' narrated by Buddy Glass and describing his army leave, during which he attends his brother Seymour's wedding.'Seymour: an Introduction' is Buddy's description of his brother Seymour, told in stream of consciousness as Buddy remembers his brother from his home. In the publisher's original cloth bindings, with price unclipped dust wrappers. Externally, excellent, with minor bumps to 'Roof Beam' back strip head and tail. Light sunning to dust wrapper back strips. Rubbing to head of 'Franny' back strip, with small closed tear over front joint. Spotting to 'Franny' front wrap, and light handling marks to rear. Card reinforcement running the head of the length of the dust wrapper reverse. 'Roof Beam' wrap perimeters age toned. Internally, firmly bound. Pages clean and bright. Fine. book.
