Obwohl Salinger nur einen Roman, mehrere längere Erzählungen und 35 Kurzgeschichten geschrieben hat, gilt er bis heute als einer der meistgelesenen und -rezensierten amerikanischen Autoren der Nachkriegszeit. Sein literarischer Mythos geht so weit, dass Kritiker ein ganzes Jahrzehnt der amerikanischen Literaturgeschichte die Jahre von 1948 bis 1959 als Ära Salinger" bezeichnet haben.
