He did a Doctor of Philosophy degree at the University of London in 1967, on the subject of the 14th-century Earl of Pembroke, Aymer de Valence and later he published this book on the same subject. Phillips was head of the department of medieval history, at the University College Dublin.Today he is professor emeritus at that university. In 2010, Phillips contributed a volume on King Edward II to the Yale English Monarchs series. ; Bookplate of George PPeddy Cuttino (1914-1991) who taught at Emory for 32 years and was a distinguished and beloved professor and author. He was a two-time Guggenheim Fellowship recipient and he chaired the Emory history department in the early 1970's. He also served in the U.S. Army during World War I and worked for the U.S. Army Intelligence Service at the Pentagon during the Korean Conflict. He received a Bachelor's degree at Swarthmore College and a Master's degree at the University of Iowa.
