Binding is tight and square. 335 pages : illustrations ; 23 cm. . . . . . A pivotal military treatise originally published in 1926. Drawing upon his experiences as an officer and theoretician during a transformative era for military strategy, Fuller argues that war should be studied methodically, suggesting it can be understood and managed scientifically. He meticulously dissects the evolution of military thought, emphasizing the importance of establishing foundational principles that can guide analysis and decision-making in military operations. Central to Fuller's thesis is the division of war into mental, moral, and physical spheres, advocating that a systematic, almost biological approach - using analogies from human anatomy - can clarify why some strategies and campaigns succeed where others do not. A hallmark of Fuller's work is his formulation of the Nine Principles of War, organized into cosmic, mental, moral, and physical spheres, each comprising key elements such as direction, concentration, surprise, endurance, and mobility. These principles, based on combining logical trinities, underpin much of modern strategic military thought and were influential in shaping doctrine well into the late 20th century. The book remains valuable for its efforts to fuse theoretical rigor with practical considerations, providing detailed insights into offensive and defensive strategies, the qualities of leadership, and the enduring will of both generals and soldiers.

Major-General John Frederick Charles "Boney" Fuller CB CBE DSO (1 September 1878 - 10 February 1966) was a senior British Army officer, military historian, and strategist, notable as an early theorist of modern armored warfare, including categorizing principles of warfare. With 45 books and many articles, he was a highly prolific author whose ideas reached army officers and the interested public. He explored the business of fighting, in terms of the relationship between warfare and social, political, and economic factors in the civilian sector. Fuller emphasized the potential of new weapons, especially tanks and aircraft, to stun a surprised enemy psychologically. Fuller was commissioned into the 1st Battalion of the Oxfordshire Light Infantry (the old 43rd Foot), and served in South Africa from 1899 to 1902. During the First World War, Fuller was a staff officer with VII Corps in France, and from 1916 in the Headquarters of the Machine-Gun Corps' Heavy Branch which later became the Tank Corps. He helped plan the tank attack at the 20 November 1917 Battle of Cambrai and the tank operations for the Autumn offensives of 1918. His Plan 1919 for a fully mechanized offensive against the German army was never implemented. After 1918 he held various leading positions, notably as a commander of an experimental brigade at Aldershot. The Foundations of the Science of War is a compilation of material presented by Fuller when he was chief instructor, Staff College, Camberley. It is the culmination of his theoretical writings and an early attempt to fit mechanization into the fabric of European warfare. In this work, Fuller presents a comprehensive theory of war. In this work Fuller addresses, among other topics: The Value of Military History, The Object of War, The Military Instrument, The Principles of War, and the Application of the Science of War. Fuller was prohibited by the then Chief of the Imperial General Staff, Lord Cavan, from publishing this while assigned to the General Staff. Lord Cavan believed that it was contrary to discipline for serving officers to publish books because these might cal into question the validity of the Manuals. He could not prohibit all officers from publishing but he could enforce his view on General Staff officers. Fuller asked that this tenure at Camberley be reduced and subsequently published this important work when no longer on the General Staff [see Trythall, "Boney' Fuller, page 106].

In den WarenkorbFirst edition, first impression of Fuller's controversial, but eventually influential, "big book on war"; this copy in the remainder binding of light blue cloth, the original was issued in gilt-lettered black cloth. Essentially a distillation of a course of lectures developed by Fuller, as chief instructor, for the Staff College, Camberley. Moving away from the idea that "character" was the most important component for successful generalship he "introduced. a study of psychology, philosophy, and the influence of technology on weapons and tactics - subjects which had been conspicuous by their absence previously. In Fuller's view there was an intimate connection between war and society, 'to understand war. you must understand peace: the psychology of the people. the nature of their institutions, their industry, commerce, politics and finance'" (Reid, pp. 82-3). Inevitably the book was viciously reviewed by the military establishment whose representatives Fuller took such pleasure in goading; in the Army Quarterly Brig.-Gen. J. E. Edmonds, the Great War official historian, waspishly observed that "the danger of such a book is that the young should take it seriously". Even Fuller himself came to see that the book was flawed, "like the curate's egg, [it] was only in parts good. I set out to do something which at the time I was not sufficiently equipped for mentally" he confessed to Jay Luvaas in 1963. But nonetheless the wide-ranging investigation of the interrelationship of war and social forces initiated by The Foundations. was the process that was to lead to Fuller's most far-sighted and enduring work: "For this reason it is difficult to dissent from Fuller's own observation [to Liddell Hart] in 1935:'You are right. The Foundations of the Science of War, in spite of its many faults, is the best book I have written'" (ibid., p. 106). Brian Holden Reid, J. F. C. Fuller: Military Thinker, 1987. Octavo. Numerous diagrams in the text. Original light blue remainder cloth, spine lettered in black, sides ruled in black. Recent ownership inscription of one M. S. G. Armstrong on front pastedown; some neat marginal pencillings. Small wormhole to lightly sunned spine, touch of foxing to edges of book block, but this remains a very good copy.
