First edition, first impression, of this collection of eight short stories featuring the surgeon-detective Reggie Fortune. Mr Fortune appeared in nine novels and 84 short stories published between 1920 and 1940. Agatha Christie was among his admirers: "The stories stand or fall by Mr Fortune. It is not the cases themselves, but Mr Fortune's handling of them wherein lies the fascination. Some of the best Fortune stories show the deduction of a whole malignant growth from one small isolated incident" (Edwards, p. 57). Hubin, p. 20. Octavo.
