Zustand: Good. 1909. 301 pages. No dust jacket. Green cloth with gilt lettering. Pages are lightly tanned and thumbed at the edges, with light foxing. Binding has remained firm. Boards are a little rub worn, slight shelf wear to corners, spine and edges. Corners are a little bumped. Spine ends are mildly crushed. Tanning to spine and edges. Boards are bowed. Book has a forward lean. Water marks to boards and spine.

Hardcover. Zustand: Near Fine. First edition, first issue with half-title and copyright notice. Light green cloth elaborately illustrated in dark green. Bookplate of John C. Eckel on the front pastedown, corners a bit bumped, edges of the pages a little toned else near fine. Tipped onto the front fly is a two page Autograph Letter Signed by Hewlett and dated in 1920 to Ernest Maggs of the rare bookselling firm of Maggs Brothers, discussing the sale of Hewlett's books to the firm. Folding to fit into the book, near fine, with the accompanying envelope also tipped-in.

Maurice Henry Hewlett (1861 1923), was an English historical novelist, poet and essayist. He was born at Weybridge, the eldest son of Henry Gay Hewlett, of Shaw Hall, Addington, Kent. He was educated at the London International College, Spring Grove, Isleworth, and was called to the bar in 1891. He gave up the law after the success of Forest Lovers. From 1896 to 1901 he was Keeper of Lands, Revenues, Records and Enrolments, a government post as adviser on matters of medieval law. In decorated green cloth bindings with gilt title detailing to the front boards and spines. Externally, generally smart with light rubbing in places, bumping to the extremities, and a few marks to boards. The front hinge is tender on the Forest, and both hinges are strained on Harrow. Internally, the binding is strained in Forest, and tender in places in Harrow. The pages in both are generally bright and clean, with scattered spotting, and light foxing to the endpapers and publishers' advertisements at the rear. With closed tears to the publishers' advertisements in Harrow. Good. book.
