Hardcover. Zustand: Good. Exquisite leather 'relievo' binding, designed and illustrated by Owen Jones, with verse by Mary Ann Bacon, with the engraving done by Edward La Trobe Bateman. One of a small selection of deluxe volumes produced using an innovative technique devised by the printers Edmonds & Remnants to create heavily and intricately embossed leather. Equally luxurious within, with 14 chromolithograph plates of flowers with verse by Bacon opposite, also done using chromolithography in a manuscript style and printed by Jones himself. All edges gilt. Decorative cloth end-papers. Inner and outer dentelles. 4to. Rubbing to top and tail of spine. Some cracking to joints . Rubbing to leather at edges. Binding sound and contents clean. Good/very good.

Hardcover. Zustand: Poor. THERE ARE NO TARIFFS OR CUSTOMS DUTIES ON BOOKS. The text block has come away completely from the boards. The leather covered boards have splits (to 3cm) to the spine head and tail, small hole to the spine, heavily scuffed corners with loss of surface, general moderate scuffing to the faces. No front end paper or half-title page. The title page has several small holes, the largest about 10x2mm. Owner's name neatly written in pencil to the contents page. The stitching is still holding the text block together and all leaves appear to be present (notwithstanding the front end papers), although one leaf is almost detached. All the leaves show parting to about 2cm at the lowest end of the gutter, with some creasing. The pages show moderate to heavy staining and soiling, the worst of which have been photographed.

The gutta percha binding has perished meaning each leaf is separate. Some light spotting and marks to contents - one page with a short closed tear, o/w. contents fine. In original cloth boards showing wear to spine. A very charming work indeed. Consists of chromolithograph plates with accompanying facing poem printed from type in gold. Spine extremities lightly worn. Several small areas of rubbing both covers. This is a so-called "perfect binding" which is still firmly intact. A beautifully-designed book by OWEN JONES with poetry by M.A. Bacon. Color-illustrated title-page. Fourteen full-page chromolithographs of flowers on versos with poetry on the adjacent recto. Table of Contents lists them all. A crisp and clean copy of this masterpiece by Jones. It is usually found in disarray with loose pages due to the binding style. Unpaginated. Please see photos.
